Where states stand in the battle for partisan advantage in redrawing US House maps
SUMMARY: Missouri has become the third state to embrace a mid-decade redesign of its U.S. House districts in a quest for partisan advantage. Missouri Gov. Mike Kehoe on Sunday signed into law a new redistricting plan urged by President Donald Trump that could help Republicans win an additional seat in next year's elections. That comes after similar actions by lawmakers in Republican-led Texas and Democratic-led California. The California plan still needs voter approval. And opponents in Missouri are pursuing a referendum petition seeking to force a statewide vote on the revised map. Other states also are considering taking up redistricting.

Regulators struggle to keep up with the fast-moving and complicated landscape of AI therapy apps
SUMMARY: As mental health chatbots driven by artificial intelligence proliferate, a small number of states are trying to regulate them. Laws in Illinois, Nevada and Utah are among the first in the nation to put limits on or ban therapy chatbots. But app creators, policymakers and mental health advocates say it is just a start and federal regulation would be ideal. App makers worry the patchwork of laws could stifle innovation needed due to a nationwide shortage of human therapists. They also note that many of the laws don’t cover generic chatbots like ChatGPT.

Against the Commanders, Penix completed 20 of 26 passes for a career-high 313 yards with two touchdowns and one interception. Robinson had 75 rushing yards on 17 carries and four catches for 106 yards. White Sox outfielder Michael A. Taylor announces retirement after 12 seasons
SUMMARY: Chicago White Sox outfielder Michael A. Taylor announced his retirement before the team's season finale against the Washington Nationals. The 12-year veteran, who won a Gold Glove in 2021, spent his first seven seasons with Washington and said playing on the Nationals’ 2019 World Series champions was his favorite memory in baseball. Taylor, who has two young children, said he decided this would be his final season a few months ago. In addition to his time in Washington (2014-20), he also played for Kansas City (2021-22), Minnesota (2023), Pittsburgh (2024) and the White Sox, who he signed with in February.

Tony Mansolino sounds unsure of his fate after 4 1/2 months as Orioles interim manager
SUMMARY: Baltimore Orioles interim manager Tony Mansolino expressed uncertainty about his future with the team. Before the Orioles' final game against the Yankees, he mentioned he might need to look for a new job soon. Mansolino took over as interim manager in May when Brandon Hyde was fired after a 15-28 start. Under his leadership, the Orioles finished 75-87. The team underwent significant changes at the trade deadline, which added challenges. Mansolino remains hopeful about future opportunities in baseball.

Mahomes shines for Chiefs, Jackson adds to Ravens' injury woes as Kansas City rolls to 37-20 victory
SUMMARY: Patrick Mahomes throws for 270 yards and four touchdowns and the Kansas City Chiefs rout the Baltimore Ravens 37-20. Lamar Jackson leaves in the second half with a right hamstring injury, the latest in a pile of injuries for Baltimore. Xavier Worthy returns from a shoulder injury to catch five passes for 83 yards, boosting the Chiefs' offense. They build a 20-10 halftime lead and cruise to victory. The Ravens, already struggling with injuries, lose more key defensive players during the game. The Chiefs capitalize on the weakened Ravens defense, scoring on their first four possessions.

Toronto beat Tampa Bay 13-4 and the Yankees and Blue Jays both finished 94-68. Toronto won the division on a tiebreaker because of its 8-5 advantage in the season series. Commanders are still waiting for Daniels and McLaurin to return and need to fix their defense
SUMMARY: Missing the injured Jayden Daniels and Terry McLaurin is hardly ideal for the Washington Commanders’ offense, yet the most glaring issue at the moment is their defense. Coach Dan Quinn and defensive coordinator Joe Whitt Jr. have work to do this week as the Commanders prepare to face quarterback Justin Herbert and the Los Angeles Chargers next Sunday following a 34-27 loss at the Atlanta Falcons. Washington is 2-2 and that includes an 0-2 record on the road. Mets can't overcome poor 2nd half of season, miss playoffs with season-ending loss at Miami
SUMMARY: The New York Mets entered Sunday’s regular-season finale against the Miami Marlins with a singular goal: win. That was the only thing manager Carlos Mendoza’s fading team could still control in its bid to reach the postseason. But those hopes dissipated in one decisive inning. New York could not overcome a four-run fourth by the Marlins, and the Mets were eliminated from the playoff field with a 4-0 loss. The Mets missed the postseason a year after reaching the National League Championship Series and after holding the best record in the majors on June 12 — a stunning collapse for the star-studded club with a major league-high $322.6 million payroll on opening day. New York’s loss meant Cincinnati earned the final NL wild card despite losing at Milwaukee.

San Diego’s Tony Gwynn had the previous low for an NL champion at .313 in 1988. The only lower average by any batting champion was .301 by Boston’s Carl Yastrzemski, who won the AL title in 1968. NHL sees benefits to changing landscape after NCAA allows CHL players to compete at U.S. colleges
SUMMARY: The NCAA's decision to allow Canadian Hockey League players to compete at the U.S. college level won't change how the NHL evaluates talent. NHL Central Scouting chief Dan Marr says players now have more freedom to choose their development path, benefiting NHL teams. The ruling in November led to a massive redistribution of talent across North America. Nearly 325 CHL players have committed to Division I college programs. The NHL has standardized how long teams retain rights to drafted prospects. CHL players can now further their development in college, offering new opportunities and challenges.

SUMMARY: Chase McLaughlin’s 65-yard field goal for Tampa Bay as time expired to end the first half of the Eagles-Buccaneers game on Sunday was the longest in NFL history in an outdoor stadium. Justin Tucker’s NFL-record 66-yarder for Baltimore against Detroit in 2021 was inside a dome. Brandon Aubrey made a 65-yarder for Dallas last year with the retractable roof closed at AT&T Stadium. Special teams got the Eagles started with another scoring play, a week after Jordan Davis blocked a field goal for a scoop and score to seal a win. Cameron Lafu broke through the offensive line up the middle and blocked Riley Dixon’s punt, Sydney Brown picked it up and returned it 35 yards for a 7-0 lead.

Vikings say Croke Park clock problem was costly in loss to Steelers
SUMMARY: The Minnesota Vikings were trying to get into field-goal range for a potential tying score late in the fourth quarter against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Not having a play clock to look at directly over the defense made it even tougher for quarterback Carson Wentz. Minnesota took a delay of game penalty with 14 seconds left, creating fourth-and-17 from the Vikings 32. Wentz then threw an incomplete pass and the comeback fell short in a 24-21 loss to Pittsburgh in Ireland’s first regular-season NFL game.

Thompson was not playing Sunday against the Minnesota Vikings in what is Ireland’s first regular-season NFL game. The Steelers say “we are aware of a situation involving Skylar Thompson on Friday night in Dublin.” The team said it is “working with NFL security to gather more information.” The Steelers beat the Vikings 24-21. Chris Sale (7-5) allowed one run on four hits with nine strikeouts and five walks in 5 2/3 innings after coming on in the second inning for Charlie Morton making possibly his final major league appearance. Raisel Iglesias earned his 22nd save of the season. Matt Olson’s eighth-inning RBI single gave the Braves an insurance run and he subsequently scored on Jared Triolo’s throwing error to first base. Pirates starter Johan Oviedo (2-1) allowed two runs on three hits.

Fake tush push and special teams TD help Eagles beat Bucs 31-25 to stay undefeated
SUMMARY: The Philadelphia Eagles used a fake tush push, another special teams touchdown and a late defensive stop to stay undefeated. Jalen Hurts tossed two touchdown passes, Sydney Brown returned a blocked punt for a score and the Eagles beat the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 31-25 for their 20th victory in 21 games. The only loss in that span for the reigning Super Bowl champions was against Washington last December in a game Hurts left with a concussion in the first half. Chase McLaughlin’s 65-yard field goal for Tampa Bay on the final play of the first half was the longest in NFL history in an outdoor stadium.

Turner wins NL batting title, Schwarber leads league in HRs, RBIs as Phillies beat Twins in finale
SUMMARY: Trea Turner won his second career NL batting title, Kyle Schwarber led the NL with 56 homes and 132 RBIs and Nick Castellanos capped Philadelphia’s 96-win season with a sacrifice fly in the 10th inning as the Phillies beat the Minnesota Twins 2-1. Turner and Schwarber have a few days to enjoy the spoils of their outstanding individual seasons before the NL East champion Phillies play again. The Phillies are set to host Game 1 of the NL Division Series on Saturday. Turner returned from a three-week layoff due to a hamstring injury and went 0 for 2, yet still finished a league-best .304 this season. Schwarber finished one homer ahead of Dodgers two-way star Shohei Ohtani to lead the NL and four behind MLB leader Cal Raleigh of Seattle, who hit 60.

Baker Mayfield rallies Buccaneers again before falling short against Eagles
SUMMARY: Baker Mayfield and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers were down three touchdowns, but hardly out against the Philadelphia Eagles. Mayfield finished winning drives in the final minute of each of their first three games this season. By midway through the fourth quarter of Sunday’s 31-25 loss to the unbeaten Eagles, the veteran quarterback who’s resurrected his career since joining the Bucs in 2023 had his team in a position to pull off another improbable comeback. Ultimately, a blocked punt that was returned for a touchdown and Tampa Bay’s first two turnovers of the season were too much to overcome.

Trea Turner wins NL batting title with record-low .304 average, and Aaron Judge leads majors at .331
SUMMARY: Philadelphia’s Trea Turner won his second National League batting title with a record-low .304 average, and the New York Yankees’ Aaron Judge earned his first American League championship by leading the major leagues at .331. San Diego’s Tony Gwynn had the previous low for an NL champion at .313 in 1988. The only lower average by any batting champion was .301 by Boston’s Carl Yastrzemski, who won the AL title in 1968. Turner, who went 0 for 2 on Sunday in his return from a strained right hamstring, was the NL’s only .300 hitter. The previous low of three was set in 2022 and matched last year.

NCAA rule change leads to Canadian Hockey League players making mass exodus to U.S. colleges
SUMMARY: Cale Makar has noticed major changes in college hockey since he left UMass for the NHL five years ago. The introduction of name, image, and likeness deals and the NCAA's new rules allowing Canadian Hockey League players have transformed the sport. This offseason, many players have committed to Division I programs, including top prospect Gavin McKenna. The shift allows players to play in the CHL before deciding on college. Experts believe this could elevate college hockey, with more CHL talent joining. The debate continues over whether the NCAA will surpass the CHL as the main NHL talent feeder.

Eagles send a message to the NFL and the 31 other teams with the fake tush push
SUMMARY: Nick Sirianni and the Philadelphia Eagles sent a message to the NFL and the 31 other teams in Week 4. The reigning Super Bowl champions don’t need a tush push to win. And for those who consider it a boring play, now there’s a new twist. The fake makes it even more difficult for opponents to stop and more interesting to watch. Facing a team that had their number and one that actually had some success against Philadelphia’s signature play, Sirianni and offensive coordinator Kevin Patullo mixed things up. Saquon Barkley scored a touchdown on a fake tush push and Jalen Hurts tossed an underhanded TD pass on a variation of it in a 31-25 victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday.

Irish police not able to substantiate report that Steelers' Skylar Thompson was assaulted and robbed
SUMMARY: Irish police say a formal complaint has not been filed in connection to reports that Pittsburgh Steelers player Skylar Thompson was assaulted and robbed in Dublin while his team was preparing to play a game in the city. The national police said in a statement Monday it did not have information to substantiate the reports involving Thompson, a reserve quarterback on the Steelers. The Irish Independent newspaper had reported that “a number of males were involved in an assault on Thompson near the Temple Bar area” on Friday night and that his phone was stolen. The Steelers said they were aware of the situation and gathering more information.

Eagles have plenty of ugly play, worse statistics to clean up even as Super Bowl champs sit at 4-0
SUMMARY: The Philadelphia Eagles continue to win even if it isn't pretty. The Eagles won in Tampa Bay for their franchise record-tying 10th consecutive victory and improved to 4-0 for the eighth time in team history. This is the Eagles’ second 10-game winning streak in the last 12 months. They are on a 20-1 stretch, marking the most victories over any 21-game stretch in team history. Nick Sirianni is the third head coach in NFL history with three 4-0 starts in their first five career seasons, joining Paul Brown and George Halas.
