Former midshipman charged with sending online threat that caused US Naval Academy lockdown
SUMMARY: Federal prosecutors say a former U.S. Naval Academy midshipman has been charged with making a threat across state lines related to a lockdown and shooting at the academy in Maryland last week. The U.S. Attorney's Office for the Northern District of Indiana said in a news release Tuesday that 23-year-old Jackson Fleming was arrested Friday on suspicion of sending an online threat through a social media application. Fleming, of Chesterton, Indiana, was charged with one count of transmitting a threat in interstate communication. Jonathan Bedi, Fleming’s attorney, says that they intend to fight the charges in court.

What to know about the congressional redistricting trend kick-started by Trump
SUMMARY: President Donald Trump’s call to redraw U.S. House districts before the 2026 elections has led to a wave of political maneuvering among state-level Republicans and Democrats. Texas Republicans were the first to take up redistricting intended to help their party win more seats. Then came Democratic-led California and Republican-led Missouri. More states could be following, including Republican-led Indiana. Redistricting typically occurs once a decade, after each census. The current mid-decade redistricting is being driven partly by the close political margins in Congress. Democrats need to gain just three seats in next year's elections to take control of the House from Republicans.

Why prosecutors charged Luigi Mangione with terrorism and a judge said no
SUMMARY: A judge has shut down prosecutors' attempt to use a 9/11-era New York terrorism law in their case against Luigi Mangione. If it sounded like an unusual application of a terrorism law, it wasn’t a first. Such charges have been brought in other cases that weren’t about cross-border extremism or a plot to kill masses of people. And sometimes they've been rejected. In Mangione's case, a Manhattan judge said Tuesday that the state anti-terror statute doesn’t apply to the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson last year. Mangione still faces murder and other charges. He has pleaded not guilty in both state and federal cases.

Pennsylvania governor says US must 'turn the tide' against political violence, reject vengeance
SUMMARY: Gov. Josh Shapiro of Pennsylvania says that the nation must “turn the tide” against political violence and the belief that government can’t solve problems. The Democratic governor delivered the remarks Tuesday at the Eradicate Hate Global Summit in Pittsburgh, days after the assassination of conservative political activist Charlie Kirk. Shapiro says political leaders must condemn all forms of political violence and reject the “rhetoric of vengeance." Shapiro and his family fled the governor’s office residence in the middle of the night in April after an alleged arsonist broke in and set it on fire in an attempt to kill Shapiro.

From Utah to New York, key developments in cases of US political violence
SUMMARY: Political violence has rocked the U.S. multiple times in recent months, culminating with the killing of conservative activist Charlie Kirk at a Utah university. The confluence on Tuesday of five different developments tied to recent acts of political violence underscores the trend’s prevalence in American society. Prosecutors announced charges against Tyler Robinson, accused of shooting Kirk last week. Meanwhile, a New York judge reduced charges against Luigi Mangione, accused of killing UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson. In Minnesota, voters picked a Democratic successor to a lawmaker who was assassinated at her home. And federal prosecutors are nearing the end of a trial over an alleged assassination attempt on President Donald Trump last year.

Obama says the US is at ‘an inflection point’ after Kirk’s killing and Trump has divided the country
SUMMARY: Former President Barack Obama says the U.S. is at an "inflection point" after conservative activist Charlie Kirk's assassination. Speaking Tuesday at an event in Pennsylvania, Obama emphasized the need for civil discourse without resorting to violence. The Democrat criticizes Republican President Donald Trump's response to Kirk's death and other administrative actions, like National Guard deployment in Washington. Obama highlights the importance of presidential leadership in uniting people, drawing parallels to his own and Republican George W. Bush’s actions during crises. Obama praises Republican Utah Gov. Spencer Cox's calls for civility following Kirk's assassination. Trump's White House on Wednesday called Obama “the architect of modern political division in America.”

Suspect in custody after driver rams car into staffed security gate at FBI building in Pittsburgh
SUMMARY: A suspect is in custody after a driver rammed a car into a staffed security gate at the FBI building in Pittsburgh, then removed an American flag from the back seat and threw it over the gate before leaving. FBI spokesperson Bradford Arick says Donald Henson of nearby Penn Hills was taken into custody after 10 a.m. Wednesday, more than seven hours later. The FBI describes it as a targeted attack but not a terrorism case. Christopher Giordano, an assistant special agent, says Henson had visited the field office weeks ago with a complaint.

Tom Brady's dual roles as Fox Sports NFL analyst, Raiders limited owner continue to raise questions
SUMMARY: The questions about Tom Brady’s dual roles as a Fox Sports NFL analyst and partial owner of the Las Vegas Raiders have intensified after he was shown in the team’s coaching booth with a headset on during a 20-9 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers. Fox Sports CEO Eric Shanks on Tuesday sidestepped any such questions about the perception of a possible conflict of interest. NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy said in an email to The Associated Press that Brady was sitting in the booth Monday night in his capacity as a Raiders limited partner.

Can Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs defy history to make the playoffs?
SUMMARY: The Kansas City Chiefs face long odds to make the playoffs after starting the NFL season 0-2. Historically, only about 12% of teams in this position reach the postseason. Despite this, oddsmakers still see the Chiefs as favorites to make the playoffs. Kansas City has won nine straight division titles but now trails the Los Angeles Chargers in the AFC West. NCAA back in court over eligibility rules for Vanderbilt QB Diego Pavia
SUMMARY: The NCAA is in court over its eligibility rules with Tuesday's hearing focused on Vanderbilt quarterback Diego Pavia. He is playing his fourth Division I season under a preliminary injunction. Attorney Rakesh Kilaru argues that the NCAA's rules don't violate antitrust laws and the association plans to enforce them. The appeals court's decision won't affect Pavia this season who also has an NCAA waiver through the 2025-26 academic year. Attorney Ryan Downton argues the rule limits the labor market by counting junior college seasons. The attorney also says Pavia plans to play in the NFL in 2026 while fighting for other junior college athletes to have the same opportunities.
