She was adopted into an abusive home in the US. Decades later, ICE deported her back to Brazil
SUMMARY: When Maria Pires was adopted from Brazil as a child, she believed she was officially an American. But her adoptive father, who sexually abused her for years, never completed paperwork to make her a citizen. As an adult, Pires served prison time for several violent crimes. Still, officials allowed her to remain in the U.S. for decades — until the second Trump administration’s crackdown on illegal immigration. Officials say she’s a serial criminal no longer welcome in the U.S. At an annual immigration check-in this March, she was detained and eventually deported. She's in a Brazilian shelter, trying to rebuild her life. Trump's efforts have swept up tens of thousands of immigrants. Many like Pires came to the U.S. as children. Their detentions often draw the loudest backlash.

Appeals court upholds New Jersey's ban on carrying firearms in sensitive places
SUMMARY: A federal appeals court has upheld a New Jersey law that barred carrying firearms in so-called sensitive places like schools and public gatherings. The 3rd Circuit Court of Appeals, in a 139-page opinion, recounted a longstanding history in the United States of prohibiting firearms in certain circumstances and reversed a lower court’s opinion that struck part of New Jersey’s law. New Jersey Attorney General Matt Platkin, a Democrat, praised the opinion in a statement. Pete Patterson, an attorney for one of the two groups of the New Jersey residents and gun rights supporters who brought the case, said they were disappointed in court’s decision and were evaluating what to do next.

Teachers sue over Trump's immigration crackdown, saying students are staying home
SUMMARY: Labor unions representing educators and school employees are suing President Donald Trump's administration over its immigration crackdown. The unions argue arrests near schools terrorize children and teachers, leading some students to drop out. The lawsuit by the National Education Association and the American Federation of Teachers claims the Republican administration's decision to allow immigration arrests at schools violates the law. The unions Tuesday joined an ongoing lawsuit in Oregon challenging the administration's decision to open houses of worship to immigration enforcement. Lawyers argue these actions violate the First Amendment and the Administrative Procedure Act. Trump's administration says criminals won't be able to hide in schools and churches to avoid arrest.

Browns rookie Judkins faces uphill battle to debut against Ravens
SUMMARY: Quinshon Judkins will have only two days of practice to prepare for his potential NFL debut on Sunday. The Cleveland Browns rookie running back was in New York on Wednesday for an NFL investigation into a possible personal conduct policy violation. Judkins signed with the Browns last Saturday after missing training camp due to domestic violence accusations in Florida. Prosecutors declined to pursue the case on August 14. Coach Kevin Stefanski expects Judkins to practice on Thursday. Whenever he plays, Judkins is expected to boost Cleveland's running game, which struggled in a 17-16 loss to Cincinnati.

How do the Ravens keep losing games they should win? A look back at the past 3 years
SUMMARY: The Baltimore Ravens' loss to Buffalo was yet another game in which they looked dominant at times, pulled off spectacular plays — and lost because they made more big mistakes at important moments than the opposition. Cornerback Marlon Humphrey questioned the team's maturity on defense. If that defeat felt familiar, it was. Basically every Baltimore loss since the start of the 2022 season, excluding games when star quarterback Lamar Jackson wasn’t playing, has been a result of self-inflicted issues.

Quinn and Jack Hughes acknowledge they'd like to play together in the NHL
SUMMARY: Vancouver Canucks executive Jim Rutherford made waves in May when he said captain Quinn Hughes had expressed an interest in playing with brother Jack in the NHL at some point. They echoed that sentiment when asked about it this week at the league's annual player media tour. Jack Hughes, who plays for New Jersey, said he's not afraid to acknowledge a desire to be teammates with Quinn, who called that comment authentic while pointing out that they have contracts. Zohran Mamdani has a new goal as he runs for NYC mayor: cheaper World Cup tickets
SUMMARY: New York City mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani is calling on FIFA to make World Cup tickets more affordable for New Yorkers. Mamdani released a petition on Wednesday demanding FIFA reverse its plan to set ticket prices based on demand, calling it “price gouging.” He also wants 15% of the tickets to be set aside at discounted prices for residents. The tournament will be played across 16 North American cities, with eight matches at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. Ed Oliver's game-changing impact doesn't cover up Bills defensive deficiencies in comeback win
SUMMARY: Ed Oliver's performance was so impactful in the Bills' season-opening win over Baltimore, coach Sean McDermott said he could feel the seventh-year defensive tackle’s presence from the sideline. If only the same could be said about the rest of Buffalo’s defense, which has much to correct in preparing to play the New York Jets on Sunday. McDermott sent a message to his defense by holding a fully padded practice on Wednesday as a reminder that its overall performance in a 41-40 win was unacceptable. NCAA investigates 13 former basketball players for sports betting violations
SUMMARY: The NCAA is investigating potential sports betting violations involving 13 former men's basketball players from six schools. The schools themselves are not under investigation. The NCAA's integrity program flagged unusual betting activities, including athletes betting on their own games and sharing information for betting purposes. The NCAA Committee on Infractions has resolved similar cases, permanently revoking the eligibility of three players from Fresno State and San Jose State for manipulating game outcomes. The NCAA will not name the athletes involved until the investigation concludes. NCAA President Charlie Baker emphasized the need for stricter regulations to address integrity risks.
