Invasive, disease-carrying tick found in Maine, the farthest northeast it has been spotted
SUMMARY: Researchers say they have confirmed the presence of an invasive species of tick in Maine for the first time, marking the farthest northeast in the U.S. where the pest has been discovered. The University of Maine and state conservation officials say Monday they confirmed the presence of the Asian longhorned tick in the state in July. The tick is native to east Asia, where it is capable of spreading tickborne infections such as spotted fever. The tick was first confirmed in the United States in New Jersey in 2017 and it has since spread to more than 20 states, clustering mostly around the eastern third of the country.

Philadelphia transit agency will use project reserves to avoid cuts. Pittsburgh's might do the same
SUMMARY: Gov. Josh Shapiro’s administration is approving the use of hundreds of millions of dollars in capital project funding for Philadelphia’s public transit agency to help it restore bus, trolley and rail services that it had eliminated to shore up its deficit-riddled finances. The approval Monday came after Shapiro and Democratic lawmakers had been unable to persuade enough Republican lawmakers to approve more transit aid to help fill deficits at transit agencies around Pennsylvania. The Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority had made the request to comply with a judge’s order to undo the two-week-old cuts. A similar request is likely to come from Pennsylvania's next largest public transit agency, Pittsburgh Regional Transit.

On Sunday night, after Jackson threw a touchdown pass, a fan shoved him and DeAndre Hopkins. Jackson pushed back, later admitting his emotions got the better of him. Harbaugh said the reaction was understandable. He emphasized that players should be able to celebrate without interference. The fan was ejected, and Harbaugh said he hadn't heard from the league about the incident.

Ravens' late-game collapse against Bills raises more questions about their ability to finish
SUMMARY: The Baltimore Ravens have built a reputation for excellence that they sabotage just enough to result in defeat. That was the story of Sunday night's 41-40 loss at Buffalo. The Ravens moved the ball at will at times on offense but couldn't hold onto the ball in the fourth quarter, giving the Bills a chance to rally. Coach John Harbaugh says “in hindsight,” the play-calling was an issue. The Ravens' reputation for folding in big moments will likely hang over them all season — and nothing short of a Super Bowl run may be enough to change it.

Missed opportunities and errors leave Browns in a familiar spot after Week 1 loss to Bengals
SUMMARY: The Cleveland Browns have faced a tough start to the season with a 17-16 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals. Despite controlling the clock and limiting Joe Burrow's passing yards, missed kicks and turnovers cost them the game. This loss puts the Browns at 3-24 in season openers since 1999. Tight end David Njoku and cornerback Greg Newsome II expressed frustration, emphasizing the need to learn and improve. Joe Flacco completed 31 of 45 passes for 290 yards, but his interception led to Cincinnati's go-ahead field goal. The Browns face the Baltimore Ravens next, needing to address their run game and capitalize on opportunities.

Russell Wilson will remain the Giants' starting QB going into Week 2
SUMMARY: Coach Brian Daboll says Russell Wilson will start at quarterback for the New York Giants in their second game of the season Sunday at Dallas. Daboll said Wilson will remain the starter on a video call with reporters Monday less than 24 hours after he left open the possibility of turning to rookie Jaxson Dart. Wilson was 17 of 37 for 168 yards in a 21-6 season-opening loss to Washington. The Giants did not score a touchdown in Week 1 for a third consecutive year. Coach Aaron Glenn praised Fields, who replaced Aaron Rodgers, for his dual-threat ability and efficiency. Fields completed 16 of 22 passes for 218 yards and ran 12 times for 48 yards. Eagles coach Sirianni declines to say if team will discipline Carter in wake of spitting incident
SUMMARY: Philadelphia Eagles coach Nick Sirianni says any discipline for Jalen Carter for spitting on Dallas' Dak Prescott will remain private. Carter was ejected six seconds into the Eagles' season opener against the Cowboys for unsportsmanlike conduct. The incident led to a 15-yard penalty, and the Cowboys scored on their opening drive. Carter apologized, calling it a mistake and expressing regret to his teammates and fans. Prescott claims he didn't intend to spit on Carter. The incident tests the NFL's new emphasis on sportsmanship, with zero tolerance for unsportsmanlike behavior. Carter has a history of disciplinary issues.

Aaron Rodgers sends a message to those skeptical about what he might have left: R-E-L-A-X
SUMMARY: Mike Tomlin and the Pittsburgh Steelers let Aaron Rodgers get ready for the season at his own pace. The four-time MVP repaid that trust with a four-touchdown performance against the New York Jets in his first game in black and gold. The Steelers won 34-32, proving Rodgers still has plenty to offer at 41. Tomlin expressed confidence in Rodgers, who felt he needed to prove himself after being let go by the Jets. While the Steelers' defense needs improvement, especially against the run, there's optimism about their Rodgers-led offense heading into a Week 2 visit by Seattle.

West Virginia loses RB Jahiem White and WR Jaden Bray to season-ending injuries
SUMMARY: West Virginia has lost running back Jahiem White and wide receiver Jaden Bray to season-ending injuries. Coach Rich Rodriguez said Monday that both players will have surgery. White injured a knee when he was tackled in the second quarter of West Virginia’s 17-10 loss at Ohio on Saturday. Ohio’s Jalen Thomeson pulled down White with a horse-collar tackle and used his other hand to grab White by the facemask. Thomeson was flagged for two penalties on the play. Rodriguez says Bray injured the same foot that cut short his season a year ago. West Virginia (1-1) will host Pittsburgh (2-0) in the Backyard Brawl on Saturday.

Eagles acquire RB Tank Bigsby from the Jaguars in exchange for 2 draft picks, AP source says
SUMMARY: A person familiar with negotiations says Jacksonville Jaguars running back Tank Bigby is being traded to the defending Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles for two 2026 late-round draft picks. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the deal had not been announced. Bigsby became expendable once the Jaguars drafted Bhayshul Tuten in the fourth round from Virginia Tech. Philadelphia was looking for a backup to Saquon Barkley after Will Shipley sustained a rib injury in the opener. Bigsby was a third-round pick from Auburn in 2023. He has 910 yards rushing and nine touchdowns in two-plus seasons.

Everyone seems to agree: Spitting on somebody else is just wrong. But it keeps happening
SUMMARY: Inter Miami’s Luis Suárez further damaged his reputation. Jalen Carter of the Philadelphia Eagles cost himself the chance to play in a season-opening game. Florida’s Brendan Bett gave South Florida a 15-yard gift on its drive that decided its win over the Gators. Their transgression: spitting. In the span of seven days from last Sunday through this past Saturday, there were three high-profile spitting incidents — all immediately and universally reviled, actions the likes of which teammates of the guilty parties couldn’t even justify.

SUMMARY: Philadelphia Phillies star shortstop Trea Turner is out with a strained right hamstring. This injury could keep him sidelined until the postseason. Manager Rob Thomson said Monday the MRI results were “better than expected.” Turner left Sunday’s game against the Miami Marlins in the seventh inning because of the injury. Turner leads the National League in batting average and hits this season. Without him, Bryce Harper was batting first against the New York Mets. The Phillies also expect Alec Bohm to miss 10 days with a left shoulder injury. The team recalled two players from Triple-A to fill their spots.

Sidney Crosby understands why trade talk surrounds him as the Penguins keep losing
SUMMARY: Sidney Crosby says he understands why trade rumors swirl around him, with the Pittsburgh Penguins having missed the playoffs each of the past three seasons. Going into another with little hope of contending, the now 38-year-old Stanley Cup champion has heard all the buzz about going to Colorado or Montreal and realizes it comes with losing hockey. Speaking to reporters at the NHL player media tour in Las Vegas, Crosby struck a balanced tone about the buzz, his current circumstances as part of a rebuilding organization and the desire of other teams and fan bases wanting him.
