After Minneapolis shooting, there are new calls for gun restrictions, and familiar divisions
SUMMARY: A shooting at a Catholic church in Minneapolis has sparked calls for action from Minnesota officials. Mayor Jacob Frey is urging a statewide and federal ban on certain semiautomatic weapons and high-capacity magazines following the shooting that left two children dead and 18 people injured. Police have said the shooter used a legally purchased rifle, shotgun and pistol. Minnesota already has some gun regulations. But the state faces challenges in passing more restrictions because neither the Democrats nor the Republicans dominate the state Legislature. Eleven states and Washington D.C. have some form of semiautomatic weapon restrictions.

Trump suggests more US cities need National Guard but crime stats tell a different story
SUMMARY: President Donald Trump has threatened to deploy the National Guard to Chicago and other big cities as a way to fight crime. Yet behind the aggressive talk, data actually shows that most U.S. violent crime has been in a steady decline. Homicides through the first six months of 2025 were down significantly in Chicago, New York City, Seattle, Baltimore, San Francisco and Portland, Oregon. It's a continuation of a trend since the end of the COVID-19 pandemic. Aggravated assaults were also down, with the exception of New York, where they were virtually unchanged. The Associated Press relied on numbers from AH Datalytics, which tracks crimes across the country.

Abrego Garcia's lawyers worry he can't get a fair trial and request gag order for top US officials
SUMMARY: Lawyers for Kilmar Abrego Garcia are concerned he can’t get a fair trial in his human smuggling case in Tennessee. Abrego Garcia's attorneys say Trump administration officials keep attacking him with prejudicial and false statements and are asking a federal judge to order officials involved with his case to hold back on their comments. Those officials would include Attorney General Pam Bondi and Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem. Abrego Garcia became a flashpoint over President Donald Trump's immigration polices when he was wrongfully deported to El Salvador. Trump's Republican administration is trying to deport Abrego Garcia again, this time to Uganda. The Trump administration says Abrego Garcia has “committed heinous crimes.”

As Trump threatens more Guard troops in US cities, here's what the law allows
SUMMARY: Since sending the National Guard to Los Angeles and Washington, President Donald Trump has openly mused about sending troops to some of the nation’s most Democratic cities — including Chicago and Baltimore — where he claims they are needed to crack down on crime. The threats to expand a federal intervention have legal experts and some military officials raising concerns that Trump is considering novel ways to use National Guard troops in American cities that could set up conflicts not seen since the civil rights era. If Trump wants the freedom to use the National Guard in Chicago, the easiest legal path is to invoke the Insurrection Act. He also could federalize and send D.C. Guard to another state.

NJ governor seeks restrictions on nonessential helicopter flights after deadly NYC chopper crash
SUMMARY: New Jersey’s governor is asking federal officials to impose restrictions on nonessential helicopter flights in his state after a New York City sightseeing helicopter broke apart in midair in April, killing six people. Gov. Phil Murphy requested in an Aug. 18 letter that the Federal Aviation Administration use its authority to prohibit or sharply reduce the number of the aircrafts operating in the state. The Democrat noted that the helicopter involved in the April 10 crash was based in Kearny, New Jersey, and plummeted into the Hudson River near the Jersey City waterfront. The FAA says it will reach out directly to Murphy’s office.

Families of Idaho murder victims want graphic crime scene photos kept private
SUMMARY: The families of two of the four murdered University of Idaho students have asked a judge to prevent the release of graphic crime scene photos and videos, saying the images are traumatizing and violate their privacy. Bryan Kohberger was sentenced to life without parole last month for the stabbing murders of Kaylee Goncalves, Madison Mogen, Xana Kernodle and Ethan Chapin in their off-campus home in Moscow, Idaho. The crime in 2022 drew worldwide attention, and the Moscow Police Department received hundreds of requests to release its investigatory records. Idaho law generally allows investigation records to be released once criminal investigations are complete.

At 34, Zach Kittley is taking over as FAU's new coach. It's a tall order
SUMMARY: Florida Atlantic’s Zach Kittley is the youngest head coach in major college football this season. He's 34. And his 6-foot-7 frame makes him stand out as well. Makes sense, since turning FAU back into a winner might be a tall order. Kittley is an anomaly in a whole bunch of ways. He hasn’t played football since high school. He freely acknowledges that he’s not the best coach in his own family; his father, a track coach with more championship rings than fingers and toes, has that distinction. And not only is he taking on the task of being a first-time head coach, he’s doing so while also calling FAU’s plays.

Commanders' duo of Jayden Daniels and Terry McLaurin reunites on the practice field
SUMMARY: Quarterback Jayden Daniels and receiver Terry McLaurin resumed practicing together this week as the Washington Commanders prepare for their season opener against the New York Giants. McLaurin is back on the field after signing a contract extension Tuesday to end a lengthy absence. The dynamic passing game duo enters hurry-up mode with not much time before the Giants game. They say their connection away from football helps that process. He began a rehab assignment Wednesday night with Triple-A Syracuse and doubled his first time up against Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. Steelers take a chance on Aaron Rodgers to end playoff drought
SUMMARY: The Pittsburgh Steelers are banking on Aaron Rodgers to lead them in 2025. The team hopes the four-time MVP can bridge the gap to a future franchise quarterback. The Dukes say they're going to try and enjoy the moment, one that could be fleeting for FCS schools like Duquesne going forward if the Power Four FBS conferences go to a nine-game conference schedule. MLB hitters swinging at first pitches at highest rate since 1988
SUMMARY: Pete Crow-Armstrong is ready to go. Same goes for Bryce Harper and Nick Castellanos. Ceddanne Rafaela, too. They are the kings of swinging at the first pitch — and they have some company. Through Thursday’s games, the MLB-wide swing percentage on first pitches this year was 32.1%, according to Sportradar. That is the same number as last year, and an increase from 31% in both 2022 and 2023. While there are some missing pitches in the data before the 2000 season, the percentage for each of the last two years is the highest such number since it was 32.6% in 1988.
