Hurricane Erin still stirring up dangerous waves while it moves away from the East Coast
SUMMARY: Hurricane Erin is starting to churn up big waves along the northeast coast after pelting North Carolina’s Outer Banks with strong winds and swells that flooded a few places on the barrier islands. The unusually large hurricane slowly began to move away from the East Coast on Thursday. Forecasters say it will slowly weaken over the next few days while turning farther out to sea. The menacing waves closed beaches from the Carolinas to New York City on Thursday. Along the North Carolina shoreline, the storm breached sand dunes on Hatteras Island. But it appears the low-lying islands dodged widespread destruction during its initial brush with Erin on Wednesday.

What states are doing in the battle for partisan advantage in US House maps
SUMMARY: Texas Republicans and California Democrats are battling for partisan advantage in U.S. House maps. And their fight may spread to other states. Republican state lawmakers in Texas are backing revised congressional districts at the prodding of President Donald Trump. California Democrats are doing likewise at the urging of Gov. Gavin Newsom. Politicians in both states are trying to give their party a chance to win as many as five more seats in next year's congressional elections. Officials in other states, such as Missouri, Ohio, Indiana, Florida, New York and Maryland, also are considering redrawing congressional districts to try to gain a partisan advantage.

Kilmar Abrego Garcia could be released from jail Friday. Here's what to know
SUMMARY: A U.S. magistrate judge is expected to order the release of Kilmar Abrego Garcia from a Tennessee jail while he awaits trial on federal human smuggling charges. The decision is expected Friday. His lawyers have said he will travel to Maryland, where his family lives. However, it's possible that immigration officials will try to detain and deport him once he's back in Maryland. Abrego Garcia became a flashpoint over President Donald Trump's immigration policies when he was wrongfully deported to his native El Salvador in March. The Trump administration returned him to the U.S. in June to face the smuggling charges in Tennessee.

Trump's crackdown in DC leaves residents on edge as federal agents set up checkpoints
SUMMARY: Federal authorities have set up checkpoints around the nation's capital, asking people for their immigration status and detaining them. President Donald Trump claims a crime crisis requires this intervention, despite statistics showing the problem was waning. Immigration enforcement seems to be a priority, with over a third of those arrested being in the country illegally. Hundreds of federal agents and National Guard soldiers have surged into Washington, creating tense confrontations. The White House reports 630 arrests since August 7. D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser acknowledges the proliferation of traffic checkpoints, raising concerns among residents.

Trump's death penalty push faces setbacks as judges block attempts to reverse prior decisions
SUMMARY: President Donald Trump's administration has been pushing for the death penalty, but judges are blocking attempts to reverse previous decisions against capital punishment. Since February, Attorney General Pam Bondi has pursued the death penalty for 19 people, including nine defendants in cases in which President Joe Biden's administration decided against it. Judges have blocked all but two of the reversal attempts, with the most recent rulings coming this week in two cases in the U.S. Virgin Islands. Upon taking office, Bondi lifted a Biden-era moratorium on federal executions and ordered a review of past decisions. A senior Justice Department official tells The Associated Press that review is nearly complete.

Apply safety rules to more trains carrying flammable cargo, lawmakers urge
SUMMARY: Federal safety investigators and some members of Congress want to expand special safety rules that apply to trains carrying flammable material to many more trains, saying the risk to many U.S. communities is far greater than currently known. An analysis by the Howard Center for Investigative Journalism found the proposals could apply the heightened safety rules to an average of 10 times more trains. The current rule only applies to trains carrying large quantities of flammable liquids. The DERAIL Act, reintroduced by Rep. Chris Deluzio, aims to redefine these trains to include even a single car of flammable gas or liquid.

John Bolton wrote a book in 2020 portraying Donald Trump as uninformed about foreign policy. Bolton's tenure in the Trump administration was marked by clashes over issues like North Korea and Iran. Bolton has continued to criticize Trump, recently commenting on Trump's statements about Ukraine and Russia. Bolton has not been detained or charged with any crimes.

Trump embraces tough-on-crime mantra amid DC takeover as he and Democrats claim political wins
SUMMARY: President Donald Trump is proudly promoting the work of roughly 2,000 National Guard troops in Washington to confront what the Republican president describes as an out-of-control crime wave in the Democratic-run city. Trump and his allies are confident that his decision to dispatch soldiers to a key American city with no clear crisis is a big political winner. Democrats say this is a fight they’re eager to have. One Democratic strategist says it's “an opportunity for the party to go on offense on an issue that has plagued us for a long time.” Trump’s power grab could be a factor for both sides in elections in Virginia and New Jersey this fall — and next year’s midterms.

Privacy and civil rights groups urge US colleges to end campus surveillance to protect protesters
SUMMARY: A coalition of more than 30 privacy and civil rights groups is calling on U.S. universities to dismantle campus surveillance and data collection in order to protect student protesters from government retaliation. The demands, issued in a letter sent to leaders of 60 major universities and colleges, directly contradict changes promised by some schools in response to intense pressure by President Donald Trump’s administration to crack down on alleged antisemitism. But the groups said that with the start of the new academic year, it is essential that universities resist that pressure, including threats to millions of dollars in federal research grants, to preserve the academic freedom and rights to expression of their students, faculty and others.

Judge says former Trump lawyer Alina Habba has been unlawfully serving as US attorney in New Jersey
SUMMARY: A judge has ruled that President Donald Trump’s former lawyer, Alina Habba, has been unlawfully serving as the the top federal prosecutor in New Jersey. U.S. District Judge Matthew Brann held Thursday that Habba’s term as the interim U.S. attorney ended in July, and the Trump administration’s “novel series of legal and personnel moves” to keep her in the role without getting confirmation from the U.S. Senate didn’t follow procedures required by federal law. It wasn’t immediately clear if that meant Habba would remain in charge of the U.S. attorney’s office temporarily, or who would make key decisions in the prosecutor’s office if she was sidelined.

Strong winds and waves batter Nantucket, Martha’s Vineyard as Hurricane Erin moves out to the sea

Medical museum in Philadelphia overhauls policies on human remains to meet modern ethical standards
SUMMARY: A medical museum in Philadelphia is redrawing its policies about collecting and displaying human remains. The Mutter Museum announced it is limiting its acceptance of additional specimens and working to follow “evolving modern medical ethical standards” in handling the 6,500 remains in its collection. Many are body parts and organs collected between about 1840 and 1940 during autopsies and surgery because they were considered helpful in medical education. The museum is also working to “de-anonymize” its collection by looking into the personal histories of the remains. The goal is to exhibit them in the context of medical history, bodily diversity and the tools and therapies used to treat them.

Villanova says a report of a campus shooter was a 'cruel hoax'
SUMMARY: False reports of active shooters have led to panic and temporary lockdowns at Villanova University and the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. In Pennsylvania someone called 911 at about 4:30 p.m. reporting an active shooter in a Villanova law school building with at least one wounded victim. But the school's president later said it was a “cruel hoax.” In Chattanooga the unfounded report came in about four hours earlier. The Ravens kept him out of practice, but he's expected to be fine.
