Salvadoran fugitive sentenced to life in woman's killing on a Maryland hiking trail
SUMMARY: A fugitive from El Salvador has been sentenced to life without parole in the killing of a Maryland woman who was attacked on a popular hiking trail northeast of Baltimore. Prosecutors say 24-year-old Victor Martinez-Hernandez grabbed Rachel Morin off the trail, bashed her head against some rocks, raped her and concealed her body in a drainage culvert. He was found guilty of first-degree murder and other offenses at a jury trial in April. The death of Morin, a 37-year-old mother of five, became a flashpoint in the 2024 presidential election campaign as Donald Trump called for mass deportations of immigrants living in the U.S. illegally.

Trump says he's placing Washington police under federal control and activating the National Guard
SUMMARY: President Donald Trump says he’s taking over Washington’s police department and activating 800 members of the National Guard in the hopes of reducing crime, even as city officials stressed crime is already falling in the nation’s capital. Washington Mayor Muriel Bowser said she will follow the law even as she indicated that Trump’s actions were a reason why the District of Columbia should be a state with legal protections from such actions. The president, flanked by his attorney general, his defense secretary and the FBI director, said Monday he was declaring a public safety emergency and his administration would be removing homeless encampments.

Trump's rhetoric about DC echoes a history of racist narratives about urban crime
SUMMARY: President Donald Trump's rhetoric in his federal takeover of Washington police echoes that of conservative politicians going back decades who've denounced American cities with majority non-white populations or progressive leaders as crime-ridden and in need of outside intervention. The Republican president has taken control of Washington’s law enforcement and ordered National Guard troops to deploy onto the streets of the nation’s capital. Guard troops arrived at their Washington headquarters Tuesday. Trump argues the extraordinary move is a response to a public safety crisis. Advocates in Washington's Black community say they'd been preparing for a potential federal crackdown since 2020, when Trump deployed U.S. troops during racial justice protests after George Floyd's killing.

New Jersey city still has little or no water pressure 4 days after water main break
SUMMARY: Residents in a northern New Jersey city are growing more frustrated as they endure a fourth day with little or no water service following a water main break. Some Paterson residents are relying on portable showers and toilets to meet their basic needs. But officials in the state’s third-largest city said Monday that repairs should be completed by Tuesday night at the latest. The problems stem from a 30-inch, 140-year-old water main that broke Friday. Some residents have had no water service since and thousands are dealing with extremely low water pressure.

Business spat between Daryl Hall and John Oates has been resolved in arbitration, attorneys say
SUMMARY: A court filing says Daryl Hall and John Oates have resolved their dispute over a Hall & Oates business partnership through arbitration. The filing by Hall's attorneys Monday shows the estranged duo reached a private ending after details of the rift between the duo went public in court documents after Hall sued Oates in 2023. A judge required the status update on a legal case that has been dormant for a year and a half. It's unclear when the arbitration ruling was reached, or what the outcome was. An attorney for Hall declined to comment. Representatives for Oates did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Explosion at US Steel plant in Pennsylvania leaves 2 dead, 10 injured
SUMMARY: An explosion at a U.S. Steel plant that shook the ground near Pittsburgh left two dead and sent at least 10 to hospitals. An Allegheny County spokesperson says an explosion followed by several smaller blasts happened Monday morning at the Clairton Coke Works. The plant is a massive industrial facility along the Monongahela River south of Pittsburgh, and is considered the largest coking operation in North America. The explosion sent black smoke spiraling into the midday sky in the Mon Valley, a region of the state synonymous with steel. Officials said a rescue operation was ongoing Monday.

An explosion at a US Steel plant in Pennsylvania has killed 2. Here's what to know
SUMMARY: An explosion at a U.S. Steel plant south of Pittsburgh has killed two people and injured more than 10 others. One worker was rescued from the smoldering wreckage hours after Monday’s blast at Clairton Coke Works. The plant converts coal to coke, a key component in the steel-making process. Clairton is one of four major plants in Pennsylvania owned by U.S. Steel. The company has been an icon of the domestic steel industry for over a century. U.S. Steel’s CEO is vowing to find out what caused the explosion. Union officials say representatives will work to ensure a thorough investigation.

Video shows steel workers scrambling into wreckage left by explosion that killed 2 in Pennsylvania
SUMMARY: After an explosion rocked a steel plant outside Pittsburgh, workers scrambled into the wreckage alongside firefighters directing streams of water. By the time the scene was secure, two people were dead and more than 10 others were injured, including one who spent hours trapped in rubble left Monday by the blast that was powerful enough to shake nearby homes. Video from Pittsburgh television station WTAE showed workers in orange jumpsuits and hardhats running toward the wreckage at the U.S. Steel coking plant in Clairton. Investigators were working Tuesday to determine the cause of the blast, which jolted a region of the state synonymous with steel for more than a century.

From court to pin: How a Little Leaguer's bat flip became baseball memorabilia
SUMMARY: A 12-year-old from Haddonfield, New Jersey, has turned a controversial bat flip into a piece of baseball memorabilia. Last month, Marco Rocco was ejected and faced suspension for flipping his bat after a home run in a sectional tournament. His father took Little League to court and won a restraining order, allowing Marco to play in the state tournament. Now, the bat-flip moment is commemorated as a pin for the Little League World Series. The pin, not for sale, is released by the Rocco family and friends, including former major leaguers Jeff and Todd Frazier. Only 75 pins were made.

Pennsylvania House makes last-ditch effort to stave off cuts at Philadelphia's public transit agency
SUMMARY: Pennsylvania’s House of Representatives has passed transportation funding legislation in a last-ditch effort to stave off deep service cuts at the Philadelphia region’s public transit agency. The Democratic-backed bill passed the chamber on Monday, 108-95, over the objection of nearly every Republican in the chamber. The bill has the support of Democratic Gov. Josh Shapiro, but it faces an uncertain future in the Republican-controlled Senate. The Philadelphia-based Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority has said it can't keep waiting for more aid before making what it calls cuts more drastic than any undertaken by any major transit agency in the United States.

Steelers' Cam Heyward is open to sitting out regular-season games in search of a raise

The Pittsburgh Steelers defensive tackle told reporters Monday he approached the team about a new deal in February after being selected an All-Pro for the fourth time. Nearly three weeks into training camp, there's been no progress. Heyward, a seven-time Pro Bowler, has been participating in some workouts but skipping others.
