Many Delaware beachgoers feel the sting of a blooming jellyfish population
SUMMARY: More beachgoers have been getting an unexpected shock this summer as jellyfish numbers bloom along the Delaware coast. Many beach patrol captains say they’re seeing the most jellyfish activity and stings in recent memory. Dramatic increases were reported at Delaware’s two most popular beaches in July. Lewes Beach is one of them. It had over four times as many stings in July compared to the same month last year. Lion’s manes, sea nettles and moon jellyfish are some varieties that frequent Delaware’s summertime waters, but the sudden boom has shocked beachgoers. A beach patrol captain says he has never seen this many jellyfish or reports of stings.

Mother of 2 missing children held without bail after previous case dropped for mental health reasons
SUMMARY: A Maryland woman with a long history of severe mental illness has been held without bail and ordered to receive psychiatric treatment behind bars after she was recently rearrested and charged with murder in the 2014 disappearance of her two children. The new indictment against Catherine Hoggle comes three years after an earlier murder case was dismissed because she had been repeatedly found incompetent to stand trial. Montgomery County State’s Attorney John McCarthy alleges that Hoggle confessed to strangling her children during a conversation with another woman attending a group-therapy session.

Several states consider redrawing congressional maps after Texas kicks off fight
SUMMARY: Texas Republicans have launched efforts to redraw congressional maps to secure more GOP seats in the U.S. House. This move has ignited a fierce battle between blue and red states, each considering similar actions. On Monday, dozens of Texas Democrats left the state to prevent a quorum, halting the vote. Governor Greg Abbott and Republicans threaten to arrest and fine those who fled. Meanwhile, California Democrats propose reshaping their district maps to counter Texas. Other states like Missouri, New York, and Wisconsin are also exploring redistricting options, with varying strategies and challenges.

Justice Department releases new list of so-called sanctuary jurisdictions
SUMMARY: The Justice Department has identified some three dozen states, cities and counties as so-called sanctuary jurisdictions. The release of the list Tuesday came two months after the federal government quietly removed a much longer list that included many localities that support the Trump administration’s hard-line immigration policies. The earlier, typo-riddled list was met with pushback from across the political spectrum, with officials often saying it wasn’t clear why their jurisdictions were included. The new announcement doesn’t appear to threaten any consequences beyond what the federal government is already doing.

Phillies' reliever Alvarado rejoins team following PED ban, will be eligible later this month
SUMMARY: Philadelphia Phillies reliever José Alvarado has rejoined the team following an 80-game suspension for violating baseball’s performance-enhancing drugs policy. Alvarado was back in Philadelphia before Tuesday night’s home game against Baltimore and is expected to begin a minor league rehab assignment soon. The Venezuelan left-hander is eligible to return to the big leagues on Aug. 19, but can’t pitch in the postseason if the Phillies qualify due to Major League Baseball rules on PED bans. Alvarado was suspended on May 18 following a positive test for an external testosterone. Phillies president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski said the positive test was caused by a weight loss drug Alvarado took during the offseason.

In broad daylight, the Colts return to Owings Mills for a joint practice with the Ravens
SUMMARY: The Colts have returned to Owings Mills for a joint practice with the Baltimore Ravens, more than 41 years after their move to Indianapolis. The practice took place Tuesday, ahead of their preseason game Thursday night. The Colts’ relocation in 1984 involved moving vans sneaking the team out of its facility in Owings Mills in the middle of the night. The rivalry between the teams isn't as heated now, but the practice included a skirmish. Indianapolis coach Shane Steichen announced that Anthony Richardson would start at quarterback against the Ravens and play about 1 1/2 quarters, with Daniel Jones playing half a quarter.

NFL longevity demands wisdom as much as determination and talent. These seasoned guys can explain
SUMMARY: NFL careers are notoriously short. Yet the young man's league still has some space for the most seasoned players. Wisdom is just as important to sticking around as determination and talent. There were 30 active players who were born in the 1980s when training camps opened. Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Aaron Rodgers is the oldest at age 41. Minnesota Vikings free safety Harrison Smith is 36 and the only defensive back in the group. MLB contenders watch for fatigue as some starters experience an increased workload
SUMMARY: At age 34, Matthew Boyd is going back to what was once familiar territory for the left-hander. He has logged 130 2/3 innings so far in his first season with the Cubs, more than he totaled in the previous two years combined. Boyd’s workload is worth watching as the Cubs fight for the NL Central title. He is among a group of pitchers going through a jump in innings in the middle of a playoff race.
