Judge again delays Abrego Garcia’s release from Tennessee jail over deportation concerns
SUMMARY: A federal judge in Tennessee has ruled that Kilmar Abrego Garcia will stay in jail for now over concerns from his lawyers that he could be deported if he’s released. The judge was preparing to release him to await trial on human smuggling charges. Abrego Garcia’s attorneys had asked the judge Friday to delay his release. They raised concerns over what they described as “contradictory statements” by President Donald Trump’s administration. The Justice Department has said it intends to try Abrego Garcia on the smuggling charges before any moves are made to remove him from the U.S. again. A federal prosecutor had earlier told a judge there were plans to deport Abrego Garcia, though he didn’t say when.

States brace for impact as Trump's big bill nears completion in Congress
SUMMARY: President Donald Trump’s tax cut bill could have large implications for states. The legislation nearing completion in Congress could reduce federal funding to states for Medicaid and food assistance programs. But in many states, it’s too late to do much about it this year. Tuesday marks the start of a new budget year in 46 states. Though a few are still working, many state legislatures already have adjourned and had to craft a budget without knowing whether their federal funding would be cut. Some states have set aside money as a precaution. Others are tentatively planning to return in special sessions.

What to know after judge keeps Kilmar Abrego Garcia in jail over deportation fears
SUMMARY: Kilmar Abrego Garcia is being held in jail in Tennessee as he awaits trial on federal human smuggling charges. A federal judge has agreed to keep him there at the request of his own attorneys. They're concerned Abrego Garcia will be deported if he's released. The lawyers are accusing the Trump administration of making contradictory statements about what they'll do. Meanwhile, a Justice Department spokesman has said the department intends to try Abrego Garcia on the smuggling charges before any move to deport him. The Salvadoran national became a flashpoint over President Donald Trump’s immigration policies when he was mistakenly deported to El Salvador in March.

Man sentenced to 25 years to life for fatal stabbing of 9/11 emergency responder
SUMMARY: A New York man has been sentenced to 25 years to life for fatally stabbing an emergency worker in 2022. The man killed Lt. Pennsylvania governor anticipates a deal 'very soon' as lawmakers blow through the budget deadline
SUMMARY: Gov. Josh Shapiro and Pennsylvania’s politically divided Legislature will miss Pennsylvania’s deadline to pass a budget for the new fiscal year, amid closed-door talks to try to produce a compromise. Without the governor’s signature on a new spending plan by Tuesday, the state loses some of its spending authority, particularly on discretionary payments. The impact of such missed payments generally takes until August to be felt by schools and counties. Shapiro said at a news conference Monday he anticipates negotiators will agree on a plan "very soon.” All state employees under a governor’s jurisdiction are typically expected to report to work and be paid as scheduled during a budget stalemate.

Thousands of city workers go on strike in Philadelphia, affecting trash pickup, pools and 911 calls
SUMMARY: Striking city workers are joining picket lines outside Philadelphia City Hall, public libraries and other worksites as nearly 10,000 unionized employees walked off the job in search of better pay and benefits. The workers' union announced the strike on its Facebook page early Tuesday after contract talks failed. The mayor says residential trash pickup will be suspended, some pools will be closed and recreation center hours will be reduced. Police and firefighters are not part of the strike, but 911 dispatchers are. The city has offered a 13% pay raise over four years, including last year's 5% bump. Brock Boeser and Nikolaj Ehlers headline the remaining NHL free agents to watch
SUMMARY: Mitch Marner, Brad Marchand and Aaron Ekblad are off the board, leaving slim pickings in NHL free agency. This is not one of the deepest free agent classes in recent history. Still, with the salary cap going up a record $7.5 million to $95.5 million, teams are going to be spending a lot of money beginning at noon EDT on Tuesday. Among the players to watch are Brock Boeser and Nikolaj Ehlers. Six-time 20-goal scorers do not hit free agency before age 30 very often, and Boeser had 40 as recently as 2023-24. Ehlers is one of the top wingers still available.
