Former top aide to Jill Biden is subpoenaed by House Oversight panel
SUMMARY: House Republicans have subpoenaed a senior aide to former first lady Jill Biden. The subpoena from the House Oversight Committee requires Anthony Bernal to appear for a deposition on July 16. Bernal is the second former Biden staffer to be subpoenaed by the committee as part of the GOP’s rapidly expanding investigation into former President Joe Biden’s mental fitness while in office. President Donald Trump’s White House has boosted the investigation by waiving executive privilege for eight former Biden administration officials to testify, including Bernal. Democrats say the investigation is a waste of time.

Justice Department says Kilmar Abrego Garcia will face US trial before any move to deport him again
SUMMARY: The Justice Department says it intends to try Kilmar Abrego Garcia on federal smuggling charges in Tennessee before it moves to deport him, addressing fears that he could be expelled again from the U.S. within days. U.S. Magistrate Judge Barbara Holmes in Nashville, Tennessee, recently ruled that Abrego Garcia has a right to be released from jail while awaiting trial on the smuggling charges. But she decided Wednesday to keep him in custody for at least a few more days over concerns that U.S. immigration officials would swiftly detain him and try to deport him again. But DOJ spokesperson Chad Gilmartin told The Associated Press on Thursday that Abrego Garcia will first be tried in court on the charges.

Supreme Court meets Friday to decide 6 remaining cases, including birthright citizenship
SUMMARY: The Supreme Court is meeting Friday to decide the final six cases of its term, including President Donald Trump’s bid to enforce his executive order denying birthright citizenship to U.S.-born children of parents who are in the country illegally. The justices take the bench at 10 a.m. for their last public session until the start of their new term on Oct. 6. The birthright citizenship order has been blocked nationwide by three lower courts. The Trump administration made an emergency appeal to the Supreme Court to narrow the court orders that have prevented the citizenship changes from taking effect anywhere in the U.S.

What to know about Kilmar Abrego Garcia's release and risk of deportation
SUMMARY: Kilmar Abrego Garcia is back in the United States and facing human smuggling charges in Tennessee, but his future is far from certain. A federal judge has ruled that he has a right to be released while awaiting trial. But the judge is keeping him in jail for now while attorneys spar over whether prosecutors can prevent his deportation if he is released. Abrego Garcia's attorneys expect U.S. immigration officials to try to quickly deport him. The Salvadoran national became a flashpoint over President Donald Trump’s immigration policies when he was mistakenly deported to El Salvador in March.

Lawyers for Kilmar Abrego Garcia ask judge to keep him in jail over deportation concerns
SUMMARY: Kilmar Abrego Garcia's lawyers have asked a federal judge in Tennessee to delay his release from jail because of “contradictory statements” by President Donald Trump's administration over whether he’ll be deported upon release. A judge in Nashville has been preparing to release Abrego Garcia to await trial on human smuggling charges. The judge has been holding off over concerns U.S. immigration officials would try to deport him. The Justice Department has said it intends to try Abrego Garcia on the smuggling charges. But a Justice Department attorney said earlier there were plans to deport him, though he didn't say when. Abrego Garcia’s attorneys said Friday they cannot put any faith in what the Justice Department says.

Supreme Court says Maryland parents can pull their kids from public school lessons using LGBTQ books
SUMMARY: The Supreme Court has ruled that Maryland parents who have religious objections can pull their children from public school lessons using LGBTQ storybooks. The justices Friday reversed lower-court rulings in favor of the Montgomery County school system in suburban Washington. The high court ruled that the schools likely could not require elementary school children to sit through lessons involving the books if parents expressed religious objections to the material. The decision was not a final ruling in the case, but the justices strongly suggested that the parents will win in the end. The court ruled that policies like the one at issue in the case are subjected to the strictest level of review, nearly always dooming them.

Philadelphia's schools accused of failing to properly inspect asbestos in buildings
SUMMARY: Philadelphia’s public schools are facing federal criminal allegations of failing to properly inspect eight schools for damaged asbestos. The case was announced Thursday. The district agreed to have it deferred while it pays to have a court supervised monitor keep tabs on its response. The district is charged with eight counts of violating the federal Toxic Substances Control Act for allegedly failing to perform inspections in a timely manner during a recent five-year period. If the school district complies with the relevant federal law, the government can eventually drop the charges.

Idaho judge rejects Bryan Kohberger's request to delay murder trial in college student stabbings
SUMMARY: An Idaho judge says he won’t postpone the quadruple murder trial of a man accused in the stabbing deaths of four University of Idaho students. Fourth District Judge Steven Hippler made the ruling Thursday, telling Bryan Kohberger’s attorneys that jury selection will begin Aug. 4 and that opening arguments will likely be held about two weeks later. Hippler also rejected the defense team’s request to present theories of four “alternate perpetrators” to the jury, saying there was no relevant or meaningful evidence to connect any of them to the crime. The 30-year-old Kohberger is a former graduate student at Washington State University. He is charged with four counts of murder in connection with the Nov. 13, 2022 deaths.

Democrats are trying to figure out what to do about John Fetterman. One of them is stepping up
SUMMARY: Democratic Sen. John Fetterman of Pennsylvania isn’t even up for reelection until 2028, but already a one-time primary foe, Conor Lamb, is crisscrossing Pennsylvania looking and sounding like he’s preparing to challenge Fetterman again. At town halls across Pennsylvania, rank-and-file Democrats and allied progressive groups are inviting Lamb, a former congressman. Fetterman is under fire from rank-and-file Democrats for being willing to cooperate with President Donald Trump. Lamb says he isn’t running for anything right now, but he’ll do whatever he can to protect democracy and create a country with more opportunities for people. But to some Democrats, he's sounding like a candidate.

NFL suspends Justin Tucker for first 10 weeks of the season for violating personal conduct policy
SUMMARY: The NFL has suspended former Baltimore Ravens kicker Justin Tucker for the first 10 weeks next season for violating the league’s personal conduct policy. The league announced the punishment Thursday. It takes effect on Aug. 26, which is roster cutdown day, and Tucker is eligible for reinstatement on Nov. 11. He is a free agent after the Ravens released him last month in the aftermath of reports that he was accused of inappropriate sexual behavior by massage therapists. A five-time All-Pro, the 35-year-old Tucker has played his entire 13-year career with Baltimore. He’s considered one of the best kickers in NFL history, although 2024 was his worst season.

Southeast Division recap: Hornets add winning college players in NBA draft after a 63-loss season
SUMMARY: The Charlotte Hornets and Washington Wizards were the two worst teams in the Southeast Division last year, and they had two first-round draft picks each. Washington selected Tre Johnson at No. 6 and Will Riley at No. 21. Charlotte took Kon Knueppel of Duke fourth and Liam McNeeley of UConn 29th. The Hornets stuck with players from good college programs in the second round, taking players from Duke and Creighton. Elsewhere in the division, Atlanta picked up a first-round pick next year by moving down from No. 13 to 23. It was a quieter draft for Miami and Orlando.

Alijah Martin headed to the Toronto Raptors and this time has his passport
SUMMARY: It takes more than just great basketball skills to play for the Toronto Raptors. It also takes a passport. Alijah Martin learned that this spring and kept it in mind on NBA draft night. The 6-foot-2 guard from national champion Florida, delayed in his first chance to work out for the Raptors when he forgot his necessary document, brought it to New York for the draft. Sure enough, he’s Toronto bound after he was taken with the No. 39 pick. He was a starter for two Final Four teams, helping Florida Atlantic get there in 2023. Now he's headed north of the border.

NBA draft resumes with trades, early selections of All-Americans Broome and Kalkbrenner
SUMMARY: The NBA draft resumed with a trade and the deals appeared likely to continue throughout the second round. The Phoenix Suns opened it by taking Rasheer Fleming after agreeing to acquire the pick earlier Thursday from the Minnesota Timberwolves. The Wolves still made the No. 31 pick, but Phoenix and Minnesota had worked out the swap a few hours earlier, a person with knowledge of the details told The Associated Press. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the deal was not officially announced. Among the familiar names going early in the second round were Auburn All-American Johni Broome to Philadelphia at No. 35, one pick after Creighton center Ryan Kalkbrenner.

Barry Bonds will be getting a statue outside the Giants' ballpark, team CEO says
SUMMARY: Barry Bonds will be getting a statue outside the San Francisco Giants’ home stadium where he set baseball’s career home run record. Giants President and Chief Executive Officer Larry Baer said Thursday during a radio interview in San Francisco that Bonds is certainly deserving of a statue and that one is on the radar. Baer didn’t have any details of when that would happen. Bonds played for San Francisco the last 15 of his 22 big league seasons, hitting 586 of his 762 career homers while with the Giants from 1993-2007. He set the single-season MLB record with 73 homers in 2001, and hit his record-breaking 756th homer to pass Hank Aaron in a home game on Aug. 7, 2007.

Johni Broome was a college force at Auburn. He'll start his NBA journey as a 2nd-round draft pick
SUMMARY: Johni Broome has gone from college force at Auburn to second-round NBA draft pick. The Philadelphia 76ers drafted Broome with the No. 35 pick in Thursday's second round. That comes after Broome was an Associated Press first-team All-American and reached the Final Four to close a five-year college career. It offered an example of how elite college production doesn't always equate to high-end NBA potential or draft status. Broome didn't test well at the combine, notably with vertical leap. He also doesn't shoot the ball well from outside. But he has thrived as a tough rebounder and competitor.

Some sniffer dogs at the Club World Cup outfitted with booties to protect their paws from the heat
SUMMARY: Fans and players weren’t the only ones coping with extreme heat this week at the Club World Cup. Sniffer dogs — a common addition to the security details at many large sporting events — had a job to do at the international soccer tournament despite the sweltering temperatures. And because that job includes walking on hot asphalt, it can be tough on an animal’s feet. The solution? In Philadelphia, the sniffer dogs at Lincoln Financial Field were outfitted with brightly colored booties as temperatures soared.
