US--Immigration Protests-New Jersey

2 detainees recaptured after escape from New Jersey immigration detention center, 2 still at large

SUMMARY: FBI officials say two detainees who escaped from a federal immigration detention center in New Jersey last week have been recaptured, while another two remain at large. Authorities say the four men busted out of the Delaney Hall detention center in Newark during reports of disorder there. They say the men broke through an interior wall that led to an exterior one, and were able to escape from a parking lot. The FBI said Sunday that Joel Enrique Sandoval-Lopez and Joan Sebastian Castaneda-Lozada were back in custody. Franklin Norberto Bautista-Reyes and Andres Felipe Pineda-Mogollon are still on the lam.

US--Immigration-New Detention Centers

ICE is using no-bid contracts, boosting big firms, to get more detention beds

SUMMARY: No-bid contracts with politically connected companies have become crucial to the Republican Trump administration’s push for more space to hold immigrants for deportation. Those contracts include one for a now-shuttered private prison in Kansas. An agreement with Tennessee-based private prison firm CoreCivic for reopening a 1,033-bed prison in Leavenworth, Kansas, is part of a surge of contracts issued by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement without seeking competitive bids first. ICE cites a “compelling urgency” for more detention beds for immigrants in the U.S. illegally. ICE's moves have delighted industry analysts on company earnings calls and promised bigger profits but have also drawn criticism. Skeptical city officials argue CoreCivic needs a special use permit.

US--Small Business-Amusement Parks-Tariffs

Smaller amusement parks hope for a strong summer under the shadow of tariffs

SUMMARY: The tariffs wars involving global economic powerhouses such as the U.S. and China are being felt even in such distinctly local places as your regional amusement park. Families who balk at the cost of a vacation at big amusement parks like Disney World favor trips to regional parks. But if tariffs lead to economic uncertainty, they may stay home. The Trump administration's import taxes on foreign goods also could subject park owners to costs that their customers might not think about. Parts of the rides are made of imported steel that’s currently subject to tariffs. And prizes and toys people win playing games often come from China.

US--Sexual Misconduct-Diddy

Diddy juror axed for lack of candor about residency in move defense says hurts jury’s diversity

SUMMARY: A judge has dismissed a juror in the sex trafficking trial of Sean “Diddy” Combs after concluding that his conflicting answers about where he lives might indicate he had an agenda or wanted to stay on the jury for a purpose. Judge Arun Subramanian made the ruling on Monday, rejecting arguments by Combs' attorneys that it would disrupt the diversity of the jury to replace the Black man with a white juror. Subramanian had first announced late Friday that he was dismissing the juror, but multiple defense lawyers protested. The judge delayed dismissing the juror until Monday, when the trial entered its sixth week.

US-MED--Pistachio Cream-Salmonella

Salmonella poisoning linked to pistachio cream sickens 4 in Minnesota and New Jersey

SUMMARY: Four people have been sickened in two states by salmonella poisoning linked to pistachio cream, a nut butter spread. Three people in Minnesota and one in New Jersey fell ill. One person was hospitalized. The outbreak is linked to Emek brand pistachio cream imported from Turkey. The product has a use-by date of Oct. 19. The spread was sent to wholesale distributors, restaurants and food service locations nationwide. Salmonella poisoning causes fever, diarrhea and stomach cramps and can lead to severe illness and hospitalization. Young children, older people and those with weakened immune systems are most at risk.

US--Supreme Court-Anti-Abortion Center

Supreme Court agrees to hear appeal from New Jersey faith-based pregnancy center

SUMMARY: The Supreme Court will hear from a faith-based pregnancy center in New Jersey challenging a state investigation into whether it misled people into thinking its services included referrals for abortion. The justices Monday agreed to consider an appeal from First Choice Women’s Resource Centers, which wants to block a subpoena from Democratic New Jersey Attorney General Matthew Platkin seeking information about donors, advertisements and medical personnel. Platkin says First Choice won’t answer questions about its operations. First Choice challenged the subpoena in federal court, but a judge found the case wasn’t far enough along to weigh in. An appeals court agreed. First Choice says it’s looking forward to presenting its case to the Supreme Court.

CN--Trump-US Steel

Trump administration offers some details of how it would control US Steel, but union raises concerns

SUMMARY: President Donald Trump would have unique influence over the operations of U.S. Steel under the terms of the investment being made by Nippon Steel. Administration officials over the past few days provided additional insight into the so-called golden share arrangement that the federal government made as a condition for supporting the partnership. Under the government’s terms, it would be impossible without Trump’s consent to relocate U.S. Steel’s headquarters from Pittsburgh, change the name of the company, “transfer production or jobs outside the United States,” shutter factories, or reincorporate the business overseas, among other powers held by the president.

US--West Virginia Flooding

Flash flooding kills 5 in West Virginia, rescue teams searching for missing people

SUMMARY: Flash flooding caused by torrential rains has killed five people in northern West Virginia and rescue crews are out searching for three other people who are missing. Authorities on Sunday also were assessing damage to roads, bridges, natural gas lines and other infrastructure. Officials say 2.5 to 4 inches of rain fell in parts of Wheeling and Ohio County within about a half hour on Saturday night. Cars were washed away in swollen creeks and some people took refuge in trees. Ohio County emergency management director Lou Vargo says major damage to roads, highways and bridges delayed some rescue operations. Gov. Patrick Morrisey has declared a state of emergency.

PA-XGR--Pennsylvania-Budget

Talks in Pennsylvania are at crunch time over a budget, legalizing marijuana and taxing skill games

SUMMARY: Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro and state lawmakers are getting down to crunch time, with big questions still outstanding about how to balance the Democrat's spending request. A push is also on to make Pennsylvania the 25th state to legalize marijuana for adult use, raise the minimum wage and slap taxes on slot machine-like “skill” games that are popping up everywhere. Pennsylvania’s politically divided government has two weeks left to pass a new spending plan before the state loses some spending authority when the new fiscal year starts July 1. Lawmakers describe closed-door talks at a crawl, and many are watching Congress to see if the federal government will cut aid.

J.J. Spaun weathers the worst of wet Oakmont to win US Open

Midway along the Appalachian Trail, weary thru-hikers find refuge and an ice cream challenge

SUMMARY: Midway up the Appalachian Trail, a little country store in Gardners, Pennsylvania, invites hikers to take on an additional challenge: eating a half-gallon of ice cream in one sitting. So far this year, about 50 thru-hikers have finished the challenge. Besides bragging rights, they earned a commemorative wooden spoon and the honor of having their photos posted on a store bulletin board. The record, set two years ago, is under 4 minutes. US Open champion JJ Spaun turned a free fall into a title at rain-soaked Oakmont

SUMMARY: On a day built for umbrellas, J.J. Spaun reversed his own free fall, took advantage of everyone else’s and hit two shots that turned him into a major champion. The shots that will go down in history are the drive he hit on the reachable par-4 17th and the 65-foot putt he sank with the sun going down and the rain falling on 18. The first was for birdie that put him in the lead by himself. The second was for emphasis that ensured this U.S. Open would finish with one player under par. That player was Spaun, who won his first major title with a two-shot victory over Robert MacIntyre of Scotland.
