Chesapeake Bay health grade dips after hottest year on record and extreme rainfall patterns
SUMMARY: The health of the Chesapeake Bay has declined in an annual report card on the nation's largest estuary. The University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science gave the bay a C grade Tuesday. That compares to a C-plus grade last year — which was the highest grade the bay had received since 2002. The report noted that last year was the hottest year on record, with extreme rainfall patterns. Despite the grade drop, the report cited long-term improvements in dissolved oxygen in the bay’s waters to help support bay life. The report also noted long-term improvements in aquatic grasses.

Baltimore jail staff failed to protect a deaf man killed by his cellmate, lawsuit says
SUMMARY: A new lawsuit alleges that a deaf man who was killed in Baltimore's jail was forced to share a cell with a first-degree murder suspect whose violent behavior had already alarmed his previous cellmate. Javarick Gantt was strangled to death in 2022. His cellmate, Gordon Staron, later pleaded guilty. Gantt's family says the two men never should have been assigned to the same cell. They say he should have received special accommodations and allege that corrections officers failed to properly monitor the dorm the night of his death. The Maryland Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services, which runs the jail, didn’t immediately provide comment Tuesday.

Lawyers for Kilmar Abrego Garcia say Trump administration's actions left 'stain' on Constitution
SUMMARY: Lawyers for Kilmar Abrego Garcia are accusing President Donald Trump's administration of pretending for weeks to be powerless to return him to the United States from El Salvador. They made the allegation after he was flown to Tennessee last week to face federal human smuggling charges. The attorneys say the lawsuit over his deportation hasn't concluded and should focus on the government's improper actions. Meanwhile, the Trump administration has asked a judge to halt the lawsuit because Abrego Garcia is back. The government says it followed the judge's order to return him. U.S. attorneys say they'll ask for the lawsuit to be dismissed.

Nancy Wilson's stolen custom-built Telecaster guitar was recovered by police in New Jersey
SUMMARY: Police say they've retrieved one of the two irreplaceable instruments owned by the rock band Heart that were stolen in Atlantic City, New Jersey, two weeks ago. Police said Tuesday they retrieved the Telecaster guitar from a woman who bought it from the theft suspect. A vintage 1966 Gibson mandolin remains unaccounted for. The Telecaster guitar was custom-made for band member Nancy Wilson. Detectives say surveillance video showed the suspect giving the Telecaster to a woman. The woman put the guitar in her vehicle parked a couple blocks from the Hard Rock Casino & Hotel, where it had been stolen. Police contacted the woman, who surrendered the guitar.

New Jersey Transit train engineers OK tentative deal that ended strike which had halted NYC routes
SUMMARY: New Jersey Transit’s train engineers have overwhelmingly approved a tentative deal that ended their three-day strike last month that halted service for some 100,000 daily riders, including routes to Newark airport and across the Hudson River to New York City. The agency and the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen announced the results Tuesday. They say the seven-year agreement, covering the years 2020-2027, was supported by 398 members, while 21 voters rejected it. NJ Transit’s board of directors is scheduled to vote on the agreement when they meet Wednesday.

US Rep. LaMonica McIver indicted on federal charges from skirmish at New Jersey immigration center
SUMMARY: U.S. Rep. LaMonica McIver has been indicted on federal charges alleging she assaulted and interfered with immigration officers during a skirmish outside a New Jersey detention center. McIver has disputed the allegations as baseless. The skirmish happened last month as Newark’s mayor was arrested after trying to join McIver and two fellow Democratic representatives who said they went to conduct congressional oversight at Delaney Hall. Police bodycam video shows McIver’s elbows pushing into an officer, but it isn’t clear from the video whether that contact was intentional, incidental or a result of jostling in the chaotic scene. McIver said the charges amounted to the Trump administration tying to scare her out of doing her job.

Takeaways from New Jersey election: Trump looms large and signs of Democratic enthusiasm
SUMMARY: New Jersey primary voters chose their nominees — and President Donald Trump notched a win in his endorsement belt — in one of two high-stakes governor's races being held this year. While officials from both parties say November’s general election will hinge on local, pocketbook issues, the outcome will be also closely watched as a harbinger of how both parties might fare in next year’s midterm elections, as a test of Democratic enthusiasm and how the GOP fares without Trump on the ballot. Trump-backed candidate Jack Ciattarelli and Democratic Rep. Mikie Sherrill will face off in November.

After emerging from competitive primaries, Democratic Rep. Mikie Sherrill and Republican Jack Ciattarelli began the general election campaign Wednesday. Both will look to fire up their core supporters and find new voters. And both have found subtle ways to tout their backgrounds to voters during the campaign. Wisconsin lawsuit seeks to ban Elon Musk from offering $1 million checks to voters
SUMMARY: A government watchdog group in Wisconsin has filed a lawsuit seeking to prohibit billionaire Elon Musk from ever again offering cash payments to voters in the battleground state like he did in this spring’s hotly contested Supreme Court race. The lawsuit was filed in state court on Wednesday by the Wisconsin Democracy Campaign. It says that Musk violated prohibitions on vote bribery and unauthorized lotteries. It also asks the court to order that he never do it again. There is another Wisconsin Supreme Court election in April. In November 2026, control of the Legislature and the governor’s office, as well as the state’s eight congressional districts, will be decided.

SUMMARY: Protests over federal immigration enforcement raids and President Donald Trump’s move to mobilize the National Guard and Marines to Los Angeles are spreading nationwide and are expected to continue into the weekend. While many have been peaceful, with marchers chanting slogans and carrying signs against the Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency, some protesters have clashed with police, leading to hundreds of arrests and the use of chemical irritants to disperse crowds. Activists say they will hold even larger demonstrations in the coming days, with “No Kings” events across the country on Saturday to coincide with Trump’s planned military parade through Washington, D.C.

Aaron Rodgers says his decision to play in Pittsburgh this season was 'best for my soul'
SUMMARY: Aaron Rodgers says his decision to play for the Pittsburgh Steelers is centered on his love for the game. The four-time NFL MVP signed a one-year deal to join the Steelers earlier this month and joined his new teammates on the field for the opening day of minicamp. The 41-year-old Rodgers spent most of his time getting to know his surroundings, but head coach Mike Tomlin said Rodgers is the team's starting quarterback. Rodgers said the decision to come back for a 21st season was not driven by ego but what was best for his soul.

Heading into US Open, McIlroy still looking for motivation after historic Masters win
SUMMARY: Heading into the U.S. Open this week, Rory McIlroy has been disabused of any notion that life once he completed the career Grand Slam with that win at the Masters would be smooth sailing. McIlroy conceded he's had some trouble finding motivation after conquering his biggest goal. The results have showed. He finished 47th at the PGA Championship last month and missed the cut at the Canadian Open last week. In the meantime, he's had to adjust to a new driver after the old one was declared nonconforming in a routine test before the PGA.

Steelers star linebacker TJ Watt skips the start of mandatory minicamp
SUMMARY: Aaron Rodgers is ready to take the practice field for the Pittsburgh Steelers. T.J. Watt is not. The star outside linebacker is skipping the start of mandatory minicamp. Watt likely is eyeing a new deal as he enters the final year of his current contract. The four-time All-Pro and 2021 AP NFL Defensive Player of the Year signed a four-year extension in September 2021 that was scheduled to pay him $112 million and made him the highest-paid defender in the league at the time. Cleveland defensive end Myles Garrett now holds that honor after signing a deal worth $40 million a season in March.

Phillies RHP Aaron Nola sidelined 2 more weeks with rib injury
SUMMARY: Phillies right-hander Aaron Nola suffered another setback in his return to pitch when an MRI showed he has an injury in his right ribcage and will be shut down for two weeks. Nola had already been out since early May with a sprained right ankle that was progressing more slowly than expected. He experienced stiffness in his right side last week in Toronto and that wiped out a planned session against live batters. Nola underwent testing this week and had what the Phillies called a stress reaction in his right ribcage.

Jets' Jermaine Johnson expected to be healthy in time to face Aaron Rodgers and Steelers in Week 1

Dustin Johnson says he 'can grind for another six years' before stepping away
SUMMARY: Dustin Johnson is back at Oakmont and relishing memories. He won his first major in the 2016 U.S. Open under extreme conditions. That sent him on his way to being the best player in the world. Now he is with LIV Golf, and he is becoming an afterthought. Over the last 16 months, he has no wins. He has missed the cut in five of his last seven majors. Johnson says he can see himself playing six more years. He says he's willing to grind that much longer. But he'll be out of the majors except the Masters after 2026.

Scottie Scheffler is primed for another tough major at the US Open
SUMMARY: Scottie Scheffler has been such a big favorite in golf that he had to get rid of his Venmo account. Turns out he was getting requests from fans who either paid him a few bucks for their betting wins or were asking for refunds. Scheffler is the overwhelming favorite again at the U.S. Open for good reason. He's coming off three wins in his last four tournaments by a combined 17 shots. And he has the kind of tee-to-green dominance that works well at a U.S. Open test like Oakmont. Scheffler doesn't care about odds. He says everyone starts even on Thursday.

Jon Rahm: Smaller fields make top 10s easier at LIV Golf
SUMMARY: Jon Rahm hasn't finished a tournament outside the top 10 since he joined LIV Golf. But he says that streak might not be all that it's cracked up to be. Rahm said the 54-player fields held over 54 holes make it easier to record a top 10. He says against a full field, some of those finishes would be around the top 25. Bryson DeChambeau believes LIV Golf is here to stay. He says his contract is up next year and he's already looking to negotiate a new deal. He says LIV knows the value he brings to the league.

Myles Garrett hopes to add Aaron Rodgers to the 'graveyard' of QBs he's sacked
SUMMARY: Myles Garrett has sacked 31 quarterbacks during his eight years in the NFL, and Aaron Rodgers is not among them. The Browns’ star pass rusher is hoping to add Rodgers to the list after the four-time MVP signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers last week. Cleveland plays at Pittsburgh on Oct. 12 and hosts the Steelers on Dec. 28. Garrett says he wants to put Rodgers “in the graveyard.” That's a reference to Garrett's tradition of decorating his front yard for Halloween with tombstones or other ghoulish displays symbolizing every quarterback he's sacked.
