DOVER - Michael C. Westendorf passed away, Thursday, Dec. 1 in Dover. He was born in Wilmington and also lived in Greenville, S.C. and Parkersburg, W.Va., where he graduated from Parkersburg High School. Mike was a self-employed contractor who had previously worked in the insulation, auto repair and glass industries. During a major hurricane in Florida, Mike led a team of vans loaded with replacement windshields to Florida and spent the next week working day and night to get people back on the road. He was also an aerial equipment inspector who traveled the entire east coast inspecting fire equipment, leading to a job building fire trucks. He was a volunteer fire fighter and often said he got his love of cooking from all the fire houses he visited. In addition, he was an avid paintball fan, including working for a paintball manufacturer, playing in tournaments from the Carolinas to New England, and eventually serving as a referee for paintball games. Mike never hesitated to help someone in need, whether it was cooking meals, doing projects or helping out at the children's school. He could help anyone with anything, and often did. He never had just one project in the pipeline! It was always his project and one for someone else. He loved animals and was devoted to his dogs Ben, Chomper and Molly, and especially his Maggie girl who will be playing with him in heaven. He is survived by his wife, Lauren Tinsley and his daughter Quinn, the joy of his life, and his cherished step-children Aiden and Caleigh Hatcher. He is also survived by his parents, Charles and Ruth Westendorf of Wilmington, DE; his brother Matthew (Melissa) Westendorf of West Lafayette, IN and their children Sam, Emily and Ava; maternal grandmother Myrtle Geist; aunts Dorothy Manuel, Mary Quinn and Barbara Heglund, and uncles William (Wendy) Geist and John Geist, all of Wilmington, and Jay Westendorf (Ellen) of Honeyoye, NY, as well as numerous cousins. In addition, he is survived by his in-laws, John and Jane TInsley, Brian (Kelly) Tinsley and Erin (Danny) Thwaites. He was predeceased by grandparents Charles and Doris Westendorf, and paternal grandmother Janice Westendorf. Services will be held on Saturday, Dec. 10, at Torbert Funeral Chapel, 1145 East Lebanon Road, Dover, DE 19901. Visitation will be from 3pm to 5pm, followed immediately by a memorial service. In the spirit of Michael's commitment to helping others, in lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to a charity of your choice that benefits the homeless, Code Purple was very near and dear to his heart. Letters of condolences may be sent and guest book signed at www.torbertfuneral.com
