Melissa H. Shahan, 58 KENTON - Melissa H. Shahan, of Kenton, passed away on Saturday July 12, 2008. She was 58. Early in her professional career she was a member of the Air Force Reserves. Mrs. Shahan retired as a civil servant from the Dover Air Force Base. She was a graduate of Wesley College, and was employed by the United Cerebral Palsy Inc. as the Director of the Client Assistance Program. Mrs. Shahan was a member of the Cherokee Nation located in Park Hill, Okla. She was an advocate and supporter of Camp Lenape in Felton as well as involved with several organizations and held positions on varies committees as follows: Statewide Independent Living Council (S.I.L.C.), Delaware Coalition for the Americans with Disabilities Act, People on the move (Advocacy Committee), Rehabilitation Services Administration, Delaware Disability Council, and was appointed by Governor Minner to the Governors Advisory Council for Exceptional Citizens and The State Rehabilitation Council. Her greatest joy in life was spending quality time with her loving family, playing tetris and solitaire, as well as reading and making up stories for her grandchildren. Mrs. Shahan was a published author of poetry. She is preceded in death by her father William R. Mayes Sr. and brother William R Mayes Jr. Mrs. Shahan is survived by her husband of 36 years, Gene R. Shahan of Kenton; her daughters, Cary M. Wolfgang and Hope E. Squier their husbands; two loving grandchildren, Richard "Ricky" C. Squier and Samantha E. Wolfgang; her mother, Hope S. Mayes of Tampa, Fla.; brothers, Robin C. Mayes of Denton, Texas, Carlos V. Mayes of Wesley Chapel, Fla.; a sister Jane E. Stansill of Chico, Calif. Mrs. Shahan was laid to rest yesterday in the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Bear, during a private service. A Celebration of Life will be held 1 p.m. Sunday in the Kenton Ruritan Club on Main Street, Route 300 in Kenton, DE 19955. In lieu of flowers please make donations to Camp Lenape, c/o Carma Carpenter, 3249 Midstate RD., Felton, DE 19943. Letters of condolences may be sent via www.pippinfuneralhome.com.
