By Mike FinneyDOVER — Amillion Mayfield’s voice provides the messages and rhythms he likes to deliver when he is on stage performing as “Amillion the Poet.”
However, it is the Dover native’s pen that has led him to places he may never have dreamed of going to when he was growing up.
Mr. Mayfield got the wheels churning on his writing and entertainment career a decade ago when he released the book “P.I.M.P. (Poetry In Motion Proceeds), which sold more than 10,000 copies.
“That project really introduced my voice to the Hip Hop world,” according to Mr. Mayfield. “I had a poetry book before I ever released a music album, which is how I became known as Amillion the Poet.”
It has been full speed ahead for the artist ever since he got his foot in the door of the entertainment industry 10 years ago.
In April, which was fittingly “National Poetry Month,” Mr. Mayfield celebrated the release of his new book and album, “The One.”
So far, so great, according to the poet/rapper.
In less than two weeks, his new album has already surpassed 100,000 streams and is on pace to reach one million by the summer.
“My mother, who is one of my biggest supporters and toughest critics, heard me perform ‘Momma’s Boy, Daddy’s Ways’ live and loved it. That meant everything to me,” Mr. Mayfield stated. “I also felt great energy performing my lead single ‘The One’ at CareFirst Arena (in Washington, D.C.).
“Another standout moment has been a song called ‘This Lil Light of Mine’, featuring Yoneigh. There is a line I dedicated to my friend, Ashley Henry, who tragically lost her life earlier this year, and you can feel the emotion in the room every time.”
Mr. Mayfield says his journey represents a true 360-degree moment — blending music, literature, and service into one unified mission of purpose, empowerment, and impact.
Even though music has taken him to more than 30 countries, poetry has always stayed close to his heart through workshops, school visits, and juvenile facility tours.
“I believe this 10-year mark was the perfect time to release my new book and album together and celebrate my full evolution as an international hip-hop artist, poet, and author,” he revealed. “This is a true full-circle moment for me.”
Mr. Mayfield is also the owner of 1NA Alkaline Water. He took many cases of the brand to Togo, West Africa, while on tour last year to help impoverished children.
Fresh off being honored as International Hip-Hop Artist of the Year in London, along with a successful West Africa tour to Togo, the hip-hop artist continues to expand his global impact while staying deeply rooted in Delaware.
In addition to public events, Amillion continues his commitment to community outreach by visiting schools and juvenile facilities, using his platform to inspire youth to discover “The One” within themselves.
“Life is always life-ing, and God is always blessing,” explained Mr. Mayfield. “Every win I have experienced has been coupled with a loss and a lesson.”
He revealed that he had a couple of close friends that passed away along his journey and that always taught him to stay grounded.
“Moments like these keep me grounded,” Mr. Mayfield admitted. “They remind me that life is precious and purpose is bigger than the spotlight. That is why I stay committed to giving back and pouring into my community, because I truly believe we are blessed to be a blessing.
“Beyond the stages, my mission is bigger than music. It is about making sure people see ‘The One’ inside of themselves.”
