OCEAN CITY, MD - Maxwell B. Moffett, formerly of Rock Hall, Md., died Friday, July 10, 2009, in his home surrounded by his loving family, after a courageous battle with cancer. He was 89. Mr. Moffett was born June 26, 1920 in Rock Hall, Md., son of the late Simeon and Annie E. Moffett. He was raised in Rock Hall and at the age of 13 went to work on the water. In 1939 he enlisted with the U.S. Army and in 1941 he was called to active duty during World War II spending 3 years overseas. Max landed on Omaha Beach June 6, 1944, in the second wave with the 29th Division's 115th Infantry. He was in five major campaigns including; Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes and Central Europe, and received 12 medals including the Bronze Star and the Distinguished Unit Badge. He continued his service in the Army thru 1966 with the Maryland National Guard obtaining the rank of SSGT. After the war, he returned to Rock Hall working as a yacht painter and waterman, retiring in 1985. Mr. Moffett held life memberships in the Rock Hall V.F.C., Sgt. Preston Ashley American Legion Post 228 and the Millington V.F.W. Post 652. He was also a member of the 29th Division Association and attended the Rock Hall Seventh-Day Adventist Church. He enjoyed hunting, crabbing, painting decoys, NASCAR and being with his family. Mr. Moffett was preceded in death by his first wife, Evelyn Crinkelton Moffett in 1982; and a step-son, Arthur T. Hann. He is survived by his wife of 22 years, Shirley Stevens Moffett; a daughter, Carol Ann Petrovich of Ruth, Nev.; four step-children, Dottie S. Yeager of Millington, Md., S. Sharon Shahan of Rock Hall, Md., Charles S. Shahan of Greencastle, Pa., and Jeffery L. Shahan of Trappe, Md.; a sister, Isabelle Gorham of Baltimore, Md.; 18 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday evening, July 14 in the Galena Funeral Home of Stephen L. Schaech, 118 W. Cross St., Galena, Md. A Funeral service will be 1 p.m. Wednesday, July 15 in Rock Hall Seventh-Day Adventist Church, Sharp St., Rock Hall, Md., where friends may call after 12 noon. Burial in Wesley Chapel Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Rock Hall V.F.C, Rock Hall Seventh-Day Adventist Church, or Coastal Hospice, c/o the Galena Funeral Home of Stephen L. Schaech, 118 W.
