We appreciate the recent Opinion by Ms. Linda Sullivan Schulte regarding development and growth in Sussex County (“All Sussex Countians at fault for 'development creep'"). However, we feel it is important to correct a significant inaccuracy in her piece.
It states that Bayside Americana currently has 4,921 households. This figure appears to be pulled from publicly available census data, but it reflects the entire 19975 ZIP code, which encompasses a much broader area than just Bayside — including the greater Selbyville region. Using ZIP code-level data to describe a single planned community significantly overstates the size and density of Bayside.
Bayside was originally approved for 1,700 homes and later for 1,848 homes. As of today, only 1,451 homes have been completed and settled. The figure cited in the piece above fails to distinguish between Bayside and the surrounding communities, resulting in a misleading portrayal of Bayside’s actual footprint and impact.
As a spokesperson for the Carl M. Freeman Companies, I want to emphasize its commitment to transparency and constructive community dialogue, particularly as we move forward with planning efforts — including our current rezoning request. Public discussions and editorials play a vital role in shaping community opinion, and it’s essential that they are grounded in accurate, well-sourced information.
We welcome ongoing engagement with residents and community stakeholders and remain committed to responsible development that aligns with Sussex County’s long-term goals and vision.
