DOVER - Mary Galla, of Dover, died Monday, Aug. 2, 2010, at Silverlake Nursing Home. She was 88. A devoted wife and mother, Mrs. Galla, was born near Republic, Pa., close to Uniontown, Pa., Aug. 23, 1921, was the daughter of the late Peter and Catherine Tyleshevski of Polish decent. Growing up in rural Pennsylvania and being one of six siblings, she learned the value of work and the simple pleasures of life such as cooking and gardening. She worked in New York City at one point. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Tony Galla in 2000 who was enlisted in the United States Air Force for over 30 years. She and her family were stationed in Oklahoma, Hawaii, Florida and Scotland. Mary had traveled to Ireland, Germany, England and the Highlands in Scotland with family and friends and more recently to Yellow Stone Park. Upon retirement in 1989 from the Food Service Staff at Dover High School, Mary was awarded a Certificate for Outstanding Service from the Delaware State Board of Education. She loved her position in the cafeteria where she made many good friends and collected several cookie and cake recipes that she baked often to share with family and neighbors. Mary also enjoyed the fun hobby of painting and making ceramics. More recently she loved her cherry tomato and cucumber garden. She was a member of Holy Cross Catholic Church of Dover where she found support. Mary is survived by her children, Gregory Galla of North East, Md., Deborah Galla of Newark, Donna Galla of Wilmington, and Denise Galla of Dover; four grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. A service will be 2 p.m., Tuesday, Aug. 10, 2010, at Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery Chapel, 2465 Chesapeake City Road, Bear, DE 19701. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions be made in Mary's memory to the American Heart Association, 1151 Walker Road, Suite 202, Dover, DE 19904. Letters of condolence may be sent and guestbook signed at www.torbertfuneral.com.
