SLAUGHTER NECK - Mary Daisy Burton Little passed away peaceably at home on Sunday, Sept. 18, 2011, at 10:25 a.m. Mary Burton was born March 17, 1924, in Slaughter Neck, to Elmer James Burton and Daisy Sarah Burton. She attended and graduated from Slaughter Neck Public School #192. She worked at Sussex Poultry, Milton Poultry and Paramount Poultry. She returned to her first love, and became a cook at the Cheer Center in Lewes, and then the Slaughter Neck Day Care Center. After a few years, Mary relocated to Pennsylvania and worked for a private family for many years. Mary met and married Felix Little of Jamaica. She was predeceased by her son, Haywood "Jim" L. Burton; and her daughter, Nina Ellen Burton. She had a brother, John Burton; and sister, Blanche Elizabeth Burton (Haywood). She leaves to cherish her memory, her niece Gloria Daniels, whom she raised when her sister passed and Gloria, ultimately, cared for Mary until her departure. She also leaves her brother, Ralph Winder of Lancaster, Pa., whom Mary cared for as a youngster; son-in-law, Ronnie Johnson of Delmar; and a God-daughter, Mary Jefferson of Lincoln. Mary also dearly loved her dog, Missy and her cat, Molly. Mary was a lifelong member of Siloam A.M.E Church in Slaughter Neck. As a young girl she sang on the Youth Choir. When she matured in her walk with the Lord, she sang on the Senior Choir, became a member of Siloam Four, the #2 Choir, a Missionary, and was a member and Secretary to the Trustee Board for many years. She was also a member of the Willing Workers Club, a member of the Lay Organization, Kitchen Committee, and served as a member of the Pastor's Aide Committee. Mary loved to sing and cook and was famous for her chicken and dumplings and pastries. She was the neighborhood mother and took in anyone and would feed the whole neighborhood, if she could! She loved to wear her wide-brimmed hats and gloves with matching pocketbooks. She was known to her family as one of the best "family storytellers." She had quite a memory! She also could be found bouncing or holding a baby on her lap. She will always be loved by her niece, Gloria Daniels; brother, Ralph Winder (Barbara); favorite cousin, Sidney Burton; and host of nieces, nephews, cousins, great-nieces/nephews, relatives and friends. Service will be noon, Saturday, Sept. 24, at Welcome Full Gospel Holiness Church, Bishop Jamie Hazzard, Pastor, 8426 Brick Granary Road, Lincoln, where a viewing will be one hour earlier. Services entrusted to McPherson Funeral Services, Milford. (800) 796-4873.
