Mark Tyler new magistrate for First Judicial Circuit

Mark A. Tyler of Salisbury is the new magistrate of the First Judicial Circuit, succeeding Robert E. Laird Jr. who retired after 16 years of service.

Magistrate Tyler will hear divorce, custody, child support and other domestic matters as well as a variety of juvenile matters, including child welfare and delinquency cases in both Somerset and Wicomico counties.

He was sworn-in on Dec. 29 but another ceremony for family and friends was held Jan. 7, both times administered by Somerset County Clerk of Court Charles Horner.
Magistrate Tyler was born in Crisfield, son of Virginia and the late Harvey Tyler. His grandparents were Hance and Agnes Tyler and the late Leroy and Essie Landon.

He grew up in Pocomoke and graduated from Pocomoke High School, and then graduated with his bachelor’s degree from the University of Maryland Baltimore County. His master’s degree is from the College of William and Mary, and his law degree, with honors, is from the University of Maryland, Francis King Carey School of Law in Baltimore.

After graduating from law school, Magistrate Tyler clerked for the Honorable Alan Wilner on the Maryland Court of Appeals. He served for five years as an Assistant State’s Attorney in Anne Arundel County, and for the last 12 years has served as an Assistant Attorney General representing the Wicomico County Department of Social Services where he handled paternity, child support, child welfare and adult guardianship cases.

Magistrate Tyler and his wife Jodi have two daughters, Dayna and Sophia, and a son Noah.
