Marie Younger Mabrey

Marie Younger Mabrey, 74

CRUMPTON, Md. - Marie Younger Mabrey, of Crumpton, passed away peacefully on July 15, 2009 at her home. She was 74. Born on May 8, 1935, in Chestertown, she was the beloved daughter of the late Isaac Newton and Mary Cole Younger. She was one of nine. Marie graduated from Sudlersville High School, class of 1953 where she lettered in field ball basketball, softball. She was a fierce competitor and earned the top Senior Female Athlete of the Year. On Dec. 12, 1953, she wed E. Nelson Mabrey and made their home on a dairy farm near Sudlersville, and raised their family. Over the fifty-six years of marriage, Marie became very active and took on additional roles to farm wife and mother. In the early years, she became a substitute teacher and a parent volunteer in the local schools. She joined the PTA serving in several offices and later was awarded a PTA Life Membership. For more than 20 years, she served as a 4-H Leader for the local Sudlersville Willing Workers Club and later was inducted as a 4-H All Star. When not volunteering, she began selling AVON part time earning top sales awards over the next 30 years. She enjoyed sales so much and in 1982, she decided to sell cars for her brother, Jim Younger. What started out to be a short term career, Marie continued in the business working for Gambacorta Motors and Chestertown Chrysler, Jeep and Dodge earning her reputation and recognition as the top salesman for many years. However, her calling to serve God provided her the greatest joy and true fulfillment. Since the age of 12, she was asked to play the piano for Double Creek United Methodist Church and she continued to volunteer her time playing each week and serving as the Music Director for more than fifty years. In addition to serving as the pianist, she directed the choir, taught Sunday School, served as Youth Group Leader, and other various committees. In addition, she was a member and served in several offices of the Chestertown After Five Christian Women's Club and the local Gideons International Chapter. She was predeceased by her brothers, John Kealey and James Younger. In addition to her husband, Nelson Mabrey, she is survived by two daughters, Mary Husfelt and her husband Norman of Crumpton, and Joan Seitzer and her husband Bruce of Crumpton; a son, David Mabrey and his wife Amanda of Pasadena; three sisters, Betty Newton of Texas; Marilyn Price of Kennedyville, and Barbara Stammer of Edgewater; three brothers, Norman Younger of Townsend, Del., Alvin Younger of New Bern, N.C., and Ron Younger of Kennedyville; grandchildren, Billy Seitzer, III, Anna Seitzer, Dylan Dovel and Savannah Mabrey. Services will be 11 a.m. July 21, at Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday July 19. Interment will be in Crumpton Cemetery.
