Hickerson, 77 LEWES - Margaret M. Hickerson of Lewes, passed away on May 26, 2015 in Beebe Medical Center surrounded by her loving family. She was 77 years old. Mrs. Hickerson was born on January 3, 1938 in Washington, D.C. to Reginald and Julia (McAulliffe) Moran. She was the eldest of eight children. In 1954, Mrs. Hickerson married James H. Hickerson, Sr. Mr. and Mrs. Hickerson had three children: James H. Hickerson, Jr., Raymond Michael Hickerson, and Kevin Wayne Hickerson. She would spend the rest of her life being a loving and devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. Mrs. Hickerson loved animals; especially dogs. She had many throughout her lifetime, and each one held a special place in her heart. In her younger years, she enjoyed bowling. She was extremely talented at it and bowled on three separate leagues. Mrs. Hickerson worked as a substitute teacher, waitress, doctor's office assistant, and finally, as an insurance claims adjudicator for Aetna before her retirement in 2002. In 2003, she moved to Lewes. She worked part-time as a cashier for Food Lion grocery stores in Lewes and Rehoboth for many years. Mrs. Hickerson had an enormous capacity to love. Her smile could light up a room. Her mere presence seemed to brighten everyone's day. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Hickerson was preceded in death by her husband, James H. Hickerson, Sr. in 1988; her son, Kevin Wayne Hickerson in March 2015; and her brothers, Al, Charlie, Sean, and Michael Moran. She is survived by her sons, James H. Hickerson, Jr. of Venice Beach, Fla., Raymond Michael Hickerson and his wife Nancy of Lewes; her adopted daughter, Heather G. Dernberger of Lewes whom she loved dearly; her sister, Maureen Roberts; her brothers, Robert and Joseph Moran; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and her beloved miniature schnauzer, Kobi. She will be forever loved and missed by all those who knew her. A memorial service will be held on Sunday, August 2, 2015 at 2 p.m. at Mary Vessels Park Lewes. In lieu of flowers, please send donations in Mrs. Hickerson's memory to the Delaware S.P.C.A. or your local schnauzer rescue center.
