Margaret K. Laing

TOWSON, Md. - Margaret K. Laing passed away on On April 20, 2016 at The Maples of Towson Assisted Living Care Center. She was raised in Tower City, Pa., and moved to Baltimore with her husband following World War II. A devoted mother, Margaret worked for a period of time at Hutzler's Department Store in Towson, then for the Science Department at Overlea High School until her retirement. Margaret was active in her church and served as President of the Ladies Bible Class. She is also a Past Worthy Matron of Parkville Chapter #100 of the Order of the Eastern Star in Parkville, Md. Margaret loved crafts and did superb needlepoint work. After retirement she learned to play the organ, giving concerts at the music store and for a time she entertained residents of The Maples of Towson Assisted Living Care Center, where she lived from 2007 until her death. She loved to talk with prospective residents and their families about the center, and had a special bond with a caregiver, Vanna Joseph. Margaret was a great fan of the Baltimore Orioles, especially Cal Ripken. Margaret was the loving wife of the late Lloyd I. Laing; beloved mother of Anita L. Herweck and her husband Earl, of Ocean Pines, Md., Gary Laing and his wife Beverly of Wyoming; dear sister of William Kavanaugh and his wife Helen, of Cockeysville, Md.; cherished grandmother of Amy Herweck Wilson (Sean), Matthew Herweck (Sara), Craig Laing (Anne-Marie), Kelly Laing Young (Dan), and Kent Laing (Katie); also survived by 12 great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband, Margaret is pre-deceased by her parents, Dennis and Margaret VanHouten Kavanaugh, and a brother, James Kavanaugh. The family will receive friends at the Lemmon Funeral Home of Dulaney Valley, Inc., 10 W. Padonia Road (at York Road) Timonium, MD 21093, on Friday, April 29, 2016 from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. An Eastern Star service will be conducted at 7:15 p.m. on Friday evening. A Funeral Service will be celebrated at the Hiss United Methodist Church, 8700 Harford Road, Baltimore, MD 21234, on Saturday, April 30 at 2 p.m., followed by a light reception. A private ceremony for the burial of ashes will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be directed in Margaret's name to Hiss United Methodist Church at the above address and/or Alzheimer's Association, 1850 York Road, Suite D, Timonium, MD 21093.
