Man dies in Dover vehicle crash

DOVER — A man died in a single-vehicle crash on Bayside Drive on Monday, Delaware State Police spokeswoman Cpl. Amina Ali said.

Authorities said that, at approximately 3:56 a.m., a 2015 GMC Acadia was traveling north, south of Leipsic Road, approaching a slight right curve at a high rate of speed.

For an unknown reason, the driver failed to maintain control of the vehicle, and it crossed over the double solid-yellow centerlines, exiting off the west edge of the road, Cpl. Ali said.

The Acadia traveled approximately 150 feet in an embankment parallel to Bayside Drive before it struck a tree, she said. Upon impact, the SUV spun counterclockwise, overturned onto its passenger side and caught fire.

The driver, pronounced dead at the scene, has not been identified. There were no passengers, and no other vehicles were involved.

Bayside Drive was closed for approximately four hours, while the scene was investigated and cleared.

The Troop 3 Collision Reconstruction Unit is investigating and asks witnesses to call Sgt. A. Mitchell at 302-697-4454, send a message via the state police Facebook page or contact Delaware Crime Stoppers at 800-847-3333.
