On Sept. 30, women’s clubs across the state will be hosting events in support of the General Federation of Women’s Clubs’ National Day of Service against food insecurity.
This date was also recently declared as the “GFWC Delaware Step Up to End Hunger Day of Service” in a resolution by our state legislators.
Women’s clubs in Delaware have a rich history, dating back to the late 1800s, when the Dover Century Club welcomed its first members in 1897.
Clubs throughout Delaware are collecting canned and boxed food for various food pantries, serving meals to the homeless and even providing meals for lifeguards for this inaugural Day of Service.
The Dover Century and Blue Hen Chicks clubs will cap off the day in historic Dover by hosting a drive-thru food collection event that will benefit The Salvation Army and veterans’ food pantries.
That initiative will be held at 40 The Green from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The first 100 people who donate food will receive a commemorative grocery bag. We invite people throughout the state to join us in fighting against hunger in our state and to participate in an event in their own community.
