Lt. Col. Troy G. Sponaugle

Sponaugle, USAF Ret., 86 SMYRNA - Lt. Col. Troy G. Sponaugle, USAF Ret., of Smyrna, passed away in his home on Sunday June 19, 2011. He was 86. He served in World War II, the Korean War and Vietnam War. He retired in 1972 after 30 years active duty. Mr. Sponaugle was a longtime member of Holy Cross and St. Polycarp Parishes, was active in the Knights of Columbus, and served as the First Grand Knight for St. Polycarp. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Mary L. Sponaugle; six children, Mary Perrone, Velvet, Troy, Veronica Ernst, Paul, and Michael; five siblings; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at noon, Thursday, June 23, at St. Polycarp Parish, Ransom Lane and South St., Smyrna. Friends may call Thursday morning from 10 to 11:30 a.m. at Matthews-Bryson Funeral Home, 123 W. Commerce St., Smyrna. Burial with military honors will be 2 p.m., Thursday at the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 2465 Chesapeake City Rd., Bear. If desired, contributions may be sent to the Pregnancy Help Center of Kent County, 1991 S. State St., Dover, DE 19901. To send a condolence letter, visit www.delmarvaobits.com.
