Merrill Smith scored on a direct kick in the third minute of overtime to lift Sussex Academy to a 2-1 victory over Lake Forest in Henlopen South girls’ soccer on Thursday afternoon.
The Seahawks (1-1 South, 3-1 overall) tied the contest on Katherine Portillo’s goal on a penalty kick in the 48th minute. Sussex Academy’s Emma Westbrook made seven saves.
The Spartans held a 1-0 halftime lead after Roxy Troutman scored in the 15th minute. Kyra Moyer made 18 saves for Lake Forest (0-1 South, 2-1 overall).
Milford 4, Sussex Central 0: The Buccaneers tallied two goals in each half before picking up the Henlopen North win.
Cape Henlopen 1, Dover 0: Sophia Zych’s goal in the 76th minute gave the Vikings (2-2) their second win in a row.
Julie Heffernan had three saves for Cape, which finished with advantages of 7-3 in shots and 2-1 in corner kicks.
The Senators’ Campbell Gibson made six saves.
Boys’ lacrosse
Smyrna 11, Middletown 3: Jason Zeitler netted five goals and an assist as the Eagles (3-1) won their third game in a row.
Smyrna, which led 10-2 after three quarters, also got two goals apiece from Jacob Wagner and Zarek Kolakowski (2 assists) and five saves from John Williams. The Eagles out-shot the Cavaliers, 24-11.
Dover 9, Woodbridge 7: The Senators out-scored the Blue Raiders, 5-2, in the second half to pull out the victory.
Gilman (Md.) 13, Cape Henlopen 9: The Vikings out-scored Gilman, 9-7, over the final three quarters before falling short.
Henry D’Ambrogi (4 assists), Gabriel Best (1 assist) and Jaden Davis (1 assist) all scored twice for Cape (1-2) with Michael Sposato making 15 saves.
College baseball
Delaware State 5, Norfolk State 2: The Hornets scored three runs with two outs in the top of the 11th inning to win the opener of a four-game MEAC North series.
The score had been tied at 2-2 since the Hornets (3-2 MEAC, 5-10 overall) scored a run in the top of the eighth. In the 11th, John Weglarz drew a bases-loaded walk, Trey Paige followed with an infield single before Krew Bouldin was hit by a pitch.
In the Norfolk State 11th, the Spartans had runners on second and first with none out, and the bases loaded with two outs, but Hornet reliever Chandler Fitzgerald pitched out of the jam to earn his first save of the season.
DSU out-hit Norfolk State 13-7 in the contest. Cole Garey (Polytech) was 4-for-4, while Weglarz had three hits, including a double, in four at-bats to raise his season average to a MEAC- best .472.
College football
DSU to face Howard on Saturday: Delaware State will play Howard again this spring after all.
The Hornets (1-1) and Bison (0-1) are now scheduled to play in football on Saturday at 1 p.m. at Howard’s Greene Stadium in Washington, D.C.
The contest was originally slated to be played on March 27 but was postponed because of COVID-19 issues within the Bison program.
Saturday’s game with DSU is scheduled to air live on ESPN3 and rebroadcast on ESPNU on Sunday. The Delaware State broadcast of the game will also be audio streamed on HSRN.com.
College lacrosse
UD cancels rest of women’s season: The University of Delaware can canceled the rest of its women’s lacrosse season after players violated COVID-19 protocol.
The cancellation comes after notification that there was a large indoor social gathering hosted on March 21 at an off-campus residence, which violated the COVID-19 guidelines and the student-athlete social pledge, as well as the Newark city ordinance for indoor gatherings.
UD student-athletes and staff follow NCAA- and UD-required surveillance testing protocols. All individuals are tested at least once a week, with many testing two to three times per week utilizing the University of Delaware on-campus surveillance testing program.
The Blue Hens were 1-5 this season.
Mercer 21, Delaware State 3: Emily Campanelli, Tamrin Swann and Rossella Nardi scored goals for the Hornets while Moe Brown made 11 saves.
