Local roundup: Smyrna downs Dover to finish 14-0 in North

Smyrna High polished off a perfect Henlopen North campaign with a 59-38 victory over Dover on the final night of the boys’ basketball regular season on Thursday.

The Eagles will take a 14-0 record into Saturday’s Henlopen Conference championship game against South champion Seaford. The contest is slated for 4 p.m. at Dover.

The DIAA state tournament brackets will be released Friday afternoon. With this year’s tourney open to every program in the state, 46 boys’ teams are expected to take part.

It’s the first time Smyrna has finished undefeated in the North since winning the state title in the 2016-17 season.

Smyrna, which beat the Senators by only three points in their first meeting this season, led 27-18 at halftime after out-scoring Dover, 16-8, in the second quarter. The Eagles then out-scored the Senators, 17-7, in the third quarter to pull away.

Devin DeMoe (14 points), Elisha Gregory (13) and Olumuyiwa Salako (12 points, 11 rebounds) all reached double figures.

Jaheim Harrell netted 13 points for the Senators, who finish the regular season at 10-4.

Caesar Rodney 68, Sussex Central 34: Brycen Williams netted 27 points, hitting six of the Riders’ eight three-pointers, as CR avenged an earlier loss to the Golden Knights.

The Riders (9-4), who tallied a season-low 41 points against Central in the first meeting, out-scored the Knights, 28-9, in the third quarter to take control. Jaelin Joyner added 16 points.

Alton Dennis led the Knights with 11 points.

Seaford 73, Indian River 58: Tyrese Fortune poured in 33 points as the Blue Jays capped off the regular season with a win.

Brent Ricketts added 21 points for Seaford, which led 57-42 after three quarters. The South champion Jays will face North champion Smyrna in the Henlopen Conference title game on Saturday at 4 p.m. at Dover.

Willem Lambertson (17), Brendon Bradford (15) and Gage Spinks (11) paced the Indians.

Milford 75, Cape Henlopen 61: The Buccaneers avenged a Wednesday-night North loss to the Vikings.

Woodbridge 81, Laurel 45: The Blue Raiders raised their record to 8-5 with the South victory.

Delmar 62, Sussex Academy 36: The Wildcats finished the regular season with a South win.

Tatnall 61, Delmarva Christian 55: The Hornets out-scored the Royals, 20-15, in the fourth quarter to close out the win.

Gabe Herling netted 20 points, with four three-pointers, for Delmarva Christian while Zachary Smith had 12 and Jayson Handy added 10.

Girls’ basketball

Woodbridge 74, Laurel 32: The Blue Raiders beat the Bulldogs for the second time in four days to clinch the Henlopen South title.

Woodbridge (11-0 South, 11-2 overall) will take on North champion Cape Henlopen in the Henlopen Conference title game on Saturday at 1 p.m. at Dover. The Raiders topped Cape, 48-40, in last year’s league championship contest.

Dover 50, Smyrna 35: The Senators out-scored the Eagles 16-4 in the third quarter to build a 44-20 lead, before finishing the regular season at 7-7.

Caesar Rodney 70, Sussex Central 23: The Riders tallied the final 21 points of the contest before finishing the regular season at 12-2.

Alexia Jordan scored 21 points with Stacey Deputy (16) and Nubia Estwick (10) also scoring in double figures for CR, which had eight players score in the game.

Cape Henlopen 55, Milford 11: The Vikings finished a perfect 14-0 in the Henlopen North with the victory.

The pairings for the DIAA state tournament are slated to be released Friday afternoon. Cape Henlopen will play Woodbridge in the Henlopen Conference championship game on Saturday at 1 p.m. at Dover.

Cape, which led 31-4 at halftime, was paced by Mehkia Applewhite (12 points, 3 three-pointers, 6 rebounds, 3 assists, 3 steals) and Morgan Mahoney (10 points).

Sussex Tech 39, Polytech 38: The Ravens out-scored the Panthers, 7-4, in the fourth quarter to pull out the North win.

Daniya Dashiell tallied 15 points for Sussex Tech (5-9).

Jazmin Kellam and Kallie Hopkins had 10 points apiece for Polytech (7-7), which had a four-game winning streak snapped.

Sussex Academy 35, Delmar 23: The Seahawks finished the game on a 12-5 run to secure the Henlopen South victory.

Nicole DiAmico led Sussex Academy with 11 points.

Seaford 33, Indian River 21: The Blue Jays built a 21-9 halftime advantage in the South win.

M.O.T. Charter 48, First State Military 12: The Mustangs posted the victory over the Bulldogs.

Delmarva Christian 65, Caravel 42: The Royals opened up a 26-point lead going into the fourth quarter before picking up the non-conference win on Wednesday night.

The win avenged a 26-point loss to the Buccaneers earlier in the season for Delmarva Christian (10-4).

Grace Fetterman, who netted her 1,000th career points,finished with 24 points, eight rebounds, five steals and four assists. Senior Kandice Schlabach added 16 points, six rebounds, five assists, four steals and a pair of blocks while Sierra added 11 points.
