Local roundup: Smyrna cruises into Division I hockey semis

Third-seeded Smyrna High tallied five first-half goals before blanking sixth-seeded Appoquinimink, 7-0, in the DIAA Division I field hockey state quarterfinals on Thursday afternoon.

The victory puts the Eagles (13-3) in Tuesday’s semifinals, where they will face No. 2 Wilmington Charter (14-2) at 7 p.m. at DE Turf.

Ryla Wilber and Dru Moffett both had two goals and an assist for Smyrna, which also got goals from London Bebout, Madison Simpson and Regan Nacrelli. The Eagles have won nine of their last 10 games.

Smyrna will be the first Henlopen Conference team that Charter has faced this season. The Henlopen has three of the four squads in the Division I semifinals.

Polytech 2, Sussex Tech 1: Kylee Lavere scored from the top of the circle off a penalty corner with eight minutes left to lift the No. 5 Panthers past the fourth-seeded Ravens.

It was the second straight season that Polytech edged the Ravens, 2-1, in the tournament.

The Panthers (9-6-1), who are trying to reach the Division I state finals for the second straight year, face Cape Henlopen (15-2) in the semifinals on Tuesday at 5 p.m. at DE Turf.

Polytech’s Elizabeth Szell tied the contest at 1-1 in the third quarter while goalie Raegan Thomas made four saves.

Cape Henlopen 9, Dover 0: The top-seeded Vikings led only 4-0 before netting five fourth-quarter goals.

Reagan Ciabattoni collected three goals and an assist for Cape Henlopen (15-2), which next faces Polytech on Tuesday at 5 p.m. at DE Turf. The Vikings also got two goals apiece from Noelle Sabbagh (3 assists) and Kelly Bragg.

Cape Henlopen took 29 shots and held a 117-1 edge in corners.

The Senators’ Savannah Strauss made 17 saves.

Football

Delmar 24, Laurel 21: The Wildcats rallied from a five-point halftime deficit to top the Bulldogs in a showdown of former Henlopen South rivals on Thursday night.

Delmar, which finishes the regular season with a record 6-3, took the lead for good when Brandon Turner scored on a three-yard with 7:15 left in the third quarter. J.W. Warner’s two-point conversion run put the Wildcats ahead 17-14.

Delmar stretched that advantage to 24-14 when Trent Kemp scored n a three-yard run with 6:27 left in the contest.

The Bulldogs (8-2) answered with a scoring drive of its own, scoring with 5:11 remaining after a fumble recovery in the end zone following a two-yard run. But the Wildcats put together a drive to kill off the remaining time, ending the game on the Laurel 13.

The Bulldogs, who won the Class 1A, District II title, went 3-2 against Class 2A programs.

College basketball

WOMEN, Hampton 51, Delaware State 36: The Hornets fell to 0-2 with the home loss on Thursday night.

DelState led 13-11 after the first quarter before being out-scored, 40-23, the rest of the way by the Pirates (1-1).

Kiana Coomber led the Hornets with a 12-point, 11-rebound double-double. Sianny Sanchez-Oliver chipped in with 10 points of her own on 4-of-9 shooting from the field.

Blue Hen men sign two: Gabe Moss and Cavan Reilly have signed National Letters of Intent with the Delaware men’s basketball program coach Martin Ingelsby announced Thursday.

Moss is a 6-foot-8 forward from The Hill School in Pottstown, Pa. while Reilly is a 6-4 guard from Bishop O’Connell High School in Arlington, Va.

“He is a tough, rugged forward who brings a blossoming skill set and physical presence to our frontline,” Ingelsby said about Moss. “He has a team-first approach and his positive energy will be a great addition to our team.”

As for Reilly, Ingelsby said:

Ingelsby on Cavan Reilly: “We are thrilled about the addition of Cavan to our basketball family. He comes from a great high school basketball program, and brings an elite shooting stroke and savvy basketball IQ to the court. Cavan is a winner and we can’t wait to get him to Newark.”

College cross country

Two Hornets in regional: Delaware State University distance runners Albert Norman (Sussex Central) and Devin Smith will compete in the Mid-Atlantic Regionals race on Friday in Bethlehem, Pa.

Norman, a two-time Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Runner of the Week, enters Friday’s race after finishing sixth overall in the MEAC Championships where he earned All-MEAC honors for his performance.

Smith, a MEAC Runner of the Week himself, also garnered All-MEAC honors for his eighth-place finish during the MEAC Championship race. Friday’s race is a 10k course that is scheduled for a 1 p.m. start.
