Local roundup: Ricketts leads Seaford to second-round tourney victory

Brent Ricketts netted 23 points as fifth-seeded Seaford High downed No. 37 Delmarva Christian, 71-55, in the second round of the DIAA boys’ basketball state tournament on Thursday night.

The win earns the Blue Jays (13-2) a third-round home game against No. 21 Dover on Saturday at 6:30 p.m.

Seaford took a 57-31 lead into the fourth quarter of Thursday’s victory. Tyrese Fortune (13 points, 8 rebounds), Careen Bolden (12 points, 8 assists, 7 rebounds), Aviyon Matthews (10 points) and Nile Rooks (9 points, 13 rebounds) also led the Jays.

Jayson Handy tallied 23 points for the Royals (3-10) while Gabe Herling added 11.

Newark 51, Woodbridge 47: The No. 19 Blue Raiders couldn’t hold on to an early seven-point lead before falling to the No. 14 Yellowjackets in the second-round contest.

Woodbridge ends its season at 9-6.

Salesianum 70, Indian River 29: The second-seeded Sals cruised to the win over No. 34 Indian River, which finished its season at 5-11.

Wilmington Christian 57, Delmar 51: The No. 20 Warriors knocked off the ninth-seeded Wilcats on the road.

Delmar finishes the season at 10-4.

College soccer

WOMEN, Delaware 2, George Mason 0: The Blue Hens opened the season with a 2-0 win at George Mason.

Juniors Kate Henesey and Gabby Johnson found the net for the Blue Hens, while junior Lauren Krinsky earned a shutout in her first career start in goal.

The Hens host Delaware State in their home opener on Tuesday at 7 p.m. from Stuart & Suzanne Grant Stadium.

George Washington 7, Delaware State 0: Five players tallied at least one goal for the Colonials, who scored four times in the first half and three in the second.

Delaware State recorded one shot in the match.
