Local roundup: Polytech boys' winning streak snapped; Laurel picks up South wrestling win

Polytech High trailed by only a point going into the fourth quarter before falling to William Penn, 71-64, in boys’ basketball on Monday evening.

The Colonials out-scored the Panthers, 27-21, in the final quarter in snapping a nine-game winning streak for Polytech (12-3).

Dorell Little poured in 34 points for the Panthers with Kyle Gamber adding 17. William Penn is 10-6.

Wrestling

First State Military 66, Brandywine 18: Gavin Wright (113) and Kenneth George (126) both had 20-second pins to spark First State Military.

FSMA also got pins from Caden Thomas (157), Eric Baez (165), Jeyson Ramos (175), Jarrett Waltz (190), Sean Hitchens (215) and Jacob Porrini (285).

Wilmington Charter 51, First State Military 30: The Bulldogs picked up pins in the final three matches before falling short.

Winning by fall for First State Military were Caden Thomas (157), Jeyson Ramos (175), Sean Hitchens (215), Jacob Porrini (285) and Mason Milligan (106).

Laurel 55, Delmar 21: Brayden Hearn had a 27-second pin at 215 for the Bulldogs sin the Henlopen South victory.

Also winning by fall for Laurel were Landen Messick (126), Stanley Pete (144), Xavier Limehouse (150), Aiden Bell (157), Blake Hudson (165) and Joseph Baynard (285).

For the Wildcats, Kane Johnson (175) and Bryce Johnson (190) posted back-to-back pins.

College basketball

WOMEN, Delaware 77, Northeastern 67: The Blue Hens imrpoved to 5-5 in the CAA, 12-9 overall with the home win on Sunday.

Delaware out-scored the Huskies, 29-17, in the third quarter to take control.

Freshman Nakiyah Mays-Prince scored a seaon-high 14 points with seven assists. Tara Cousins also scored 14 points with Michelle Ojo (13), Demi Burdick (12), Jewel Smalls (10) and Rebecca Demeke (10) giving Delaware six players in double figures.

Coppin State 64, Delaware State 63: The Eagles scored the final five points of the contest to rally for the MEAC win.

Hope Evans’ layup with just two seconds left gave Coppin State the victory.
Savannah Brooks and Alexis Moragne scored 14 points each for the Hornets while Tyshonne Tollie added 13 points and seven rebounds for Delaware State (2-5 MEAC, 4-14 overall).
