Local roundup: Lower Sussex falls to 1-1 in Senior League World Series

Lower Sussex fell to U.S. Southwest, 5-1, in the Senior League softball World Series on Tuesday night in Roxana.

The host squad drops to 1-1 while U.S. Southwest, from Texas, improved to 2-0 after the second day of the 10-team, pool-play portion of the tournament in Little League’s age group for 14-16 year olds.

Lower Sussex plays again today at 8 p.m. when it faces Latin America (0-1).

8-10 East Regional

MOT 9, Maryland 0: The Delaware state champions opened the regional with a victory on Monday in Mountaintop Area, Pa.

MOT is slated to play again on Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. in the 10-team, double-elimination tournament.

In Monday’s win, the Middletown squad broke open the contest with six runs in the sixth inning. MOT out-shot Maryland, 9-5.

College football

Hens’ punter honored: New Delaware punter Ryan Kost has been named to the Stats Perform FCS Preseason All-America team.

It is Kost’s second preseason All-American accolade of the summer and he was also named to the CAA Football Preseason All-Conference team.

A transfer from Monmouth, Kost was a first-team All-CAA punter in 2022, and was named Phil Steele/DraftScout FCS Postseason All-America second team. He averaged 48.1 yards per punt.

College basketball

Hens to face Rhode Island: The Delaware men’s basketball team will play Rhode Island on Dec. 16 as part of the three-game Holiday Hoopfest, it was announced Tuesday.

The event, which will take place at UBS Arena at Belmont Park in Elmont, N.Y. will feature three games. The Blue Hens-Rams matchup joins Saint Joseph’s vs. Iona and Towson vs. Bryant.

Television coverage, additional games, and the public on-sale date for tickets will be announced at a later date.
