Hiram Davis stole third and scored on a throwing error in the bottom of the seventh inning to cap off a wild comeback as Delaware State edged Coppin State, 13-12, in MEAC North baseball on Sunday afternoon.
Coppin State won the nightcap, 8-5, as the two squads split the four-game weekend series.
The Hornets (4-6) went into the seventh of the opener leading, 8-4, only to have the Eagles score eight runs in the top of the seventh. But DelState answered with five runs in the bottom of the inning to pull out the victory.
Krew Bouldin (Appoquinimink) singled home Trey Paige with the tying run before Davis (Dover), who was pinch-running for Bouldin, came home with the winning run.
John Weglarz (2-for-2, 2 runs) had three RBI, with Paige (2-for-2, 4 runs) and Bouldin (2-for-4, 2 runs) both driving in two.
Paige went 2-for-3 with three RBI in the second game.
Wesley earns split: Wesley downed St. Mary’s, 12-8, for its first win of the season before losing the nightcap, 6-2, in a doubleheader on Sunday.
The Wolverines (1-3) overcame a 6-2 deficit in the first game by scoring five runs in the bottom of the fourth. Jason Boc (2 runs) and Jacob Meisel both went 2-for-3 with three RBI while Dustin Sutton (2 hits) and Jarrett Wallace scored three runs apiece.
Sam Courtney (Dover) scored twice in the nightcap.
Softball
Hornets sweep Coppin: Delaware State own the nightcap, 5-4, in 11 innings to sweep a MEAC North twinbill with Coppin on Sunday.
The Hornets (6-2 MEAC, 8-6 overall) won the opener, 12-8, to take three out of four games in the weekend series.
DelState trailed 5-0 in the opener before scoring the game’s next 12 runs. Caitlin Meyer (2-for-2, 2 runs) drove in five runs with Jaelyn Baker adding three RBI and Jade King contributing three of the Hornets’ 12 hits.
In the second game, Jasmine Melgoza singled home King with two outs in the bottom of the seventh to force extra innings. Jonah Cunnigan (2-for-2, 2 runs, 2 RBI) then scored the winning run in the 11th on a sacrifice fly by Baker.
Hens rally for split: Hanna Garber singled home her sister Julz to give Delaware a walkoff victory in the nightcap as the Blue Hens split a doubleheader with Bucknell.
The Bison took the opener, 10-6, before Delaware responded with a 3-2 win in the second game.
The Hens (8-1) trailed 2-1 in the bottom of the sixth inning of the nightcap, before Karolina Flores drilled a home run over the centerfield fence to bring UD even. Both Garbers and Lexi Moore (Smyrna) finished with two hits.
Brooke Glanden (Lake Forest) finished with two hits and three RBI in the first game, while Moore also had two hits.
Field hockey
Delaware 4, Temple 0: Femke Strien netted a pair of goals as the Blue Hens (2-1) blanked the Owls.
Julia Duffhuis and Berber Bakermans also had goals for Delaware with Ashlyn Car (Delmar) picking up a pair of assists. The Hens finished with advantages of 16-2 in shots and 5-2 in corners.
St. Mary’s 3, Wesley 1: The Wolverines (2-2) couldn’t hold a 1-0 lead in dropping their final game.
Lacrosse
WOMEN, Coastal Carolina 14, Delaware 7: Sophomore Lizzie Hsu and junior Danika Swech each scored a pair of goals for Delaware (1-5), while Kate Bradford, Jenna McHale, and Meghan Johnson found the net as well. Senior Kate Brewster had nine saves.
