UD fires men’s coach: Ian Hennessy, who led Delaware’s soccer team to pair of CAA titles as well as the program’s first NCAA Tournament win, will not return as the Blue Hens’ coach.
Delaware made the NCAAs in 2011, ‘13 and ‘16. In 2011, the Hens knocked off Virginia, 1-0, in the first round of the NCAAs before losing at UCLA, 1-0, in the second round.
But Delaware has gone only 17-29-11 over the past five seasons without winning more than five games in any of them. (The Hens played only five games last spring). Delaware went 2-12-1 this past fall.
Hessessy finishes with a 16-year record of 108-138-36 at UD.
“I want to thank Ian for his commitment to the University of Delaware and the men’s soccer program,” said athletic director Chrissi Rawak. “Our men’s soccer student-athletes have excelled in the classroom and in the community during Ian’s tenure at UD. At this time, we felt it was necessary for us to provide new leadership for our program.”
