Freshman Madge Layfield fired a two-hitter with 16 strikeouts as Sussex Central High blanked Lake Forest, 4-0, in Henlopen Conference softball on Tuesday afternoon.
The victory was the fifth in a row for the Golden Knights (5-1), who took the lead for good with two runs in the second inning.
Aryanna Briddell, who homered and doubled, had three of Central’s seven hits. Katelyn Evick also hit a homerun for the Knights.
Karly Cain and Chelsey Silver had the Spartans’ hits.
William Penn 3, Dover 2: Both teams scored twice in the seventh before the Senators’ comeback fell short.
Dover’s Alexis Dowdy pitched a six-hitter with 12 strikeouts while allowing only two earned runs.
Caravel 2, Laurel 1: The Buccaneers scored a run in the top of the sixth to break a 1-1 tie.
Couri Smith had two hits for the Bulldogs, Carlie Venables drove in their run on a fielder’s choice and pitcher Kylee Hill went the distance.
Milford 7, Archmere 3: The Buccaneers railed 3-1 before scoring five runs in the bottom of the fifth to take control.
Winning pitcher Dale Ostermann, who went six innings, and Aydin Zimmerman combined to throw a four-hitter for Milford (4-1). Mason Morris had two hits and a pair of RBI with Sam Sickles, Mitch Leighty, and James Stangl all adding RBI.
Immaculata 7, Wesley 6: The Wolverines rallied for five runs in the bottom of the eighth before falling short in the nine-inning contest.
Wesley scored all five runs with two outs, getting two-run homers from Jason Boc and Alexander Weber (3 RBI). Kyle Schneider added a pair of hits for the Wolverines (1-5 AEC, 2-8 overall).
Smyrna’s Moore among Hens honored: Delaware sophomore Emily Winburn was named the Colonial Athletic Association softball Pitcher of the Week while freshman third baseman Lexi Moore (Smyrna) was tabbed the league’s Rookie of the Week.
Winburn went 3-0 with a 0.88 ERA during three appearances in the circle last week, allowing two runs in 16.0 innings with 18 strikeouts and just two walks.
Moore batted .533 with a team-high eight hits during the Blue Hens’ four games last week, scoring four runs and leading the team with three steals. She went 2-for-4 in the first win at Penn, and finished 3-for-3 with two runs scored in the nightcap.
Moore added three hits and scored a run in Sunday’s doubleheader sweep of Drexel.
Hornets swept by ‘Nova: Villanova posted an 8-0, 11-2 sweep of Delaware State in a non-conference doubleheader.
The Hornets (8-12) had only two hits in the opener but did collect 10 hits in the nightcap. Eight DSU players had hits in the second game including two apiece from Jazmine Melgoza and Alaena Selden.
Yanique Spencer drove in both runs for the Hornets.
UD’s Robinson honored: Delaware’s Mike Robinson was named the Colonial Athletic Association Rookie of the Week in men’s lacrosse and named to the USILA Team of the Week on Tuesday.
Robinson recorded a game-high eight points on a game-best seven goals and one assist in a 16-11 come-from-behind home win over Fairfield. He led the Blue Hens’ second-half comeback efforts by scoring five goals in the third quarter alone.
His seven goals put him at 33 for the year, which leads the CAA and is tied for first in Division I.
Wesley 3, Immaculata 3: Lyod Coutilien (Caesar Rodney) and Justin John-Langba scored second-half goals as the Wolverines (1-2-1) rallied from a 3-1 deficit to earn the tie.
Joseph Esubalew netted Wesley’s first goal with Nathan White making six saves.
Hen women place third: Freshmen Oihana Etxezarreta and Christina Carroll posted top-10 finishes while the Delaware women’s golf team placed third at the Golfweek Spring Invitational on Monday and Tuesday.
The Blue Hens carded a 304 team score during Tuesday’s final round to finish third out of eight squads with a 907 total.
