Local roundup: Fox Post 2 wins opener in Legion state tourney

Dover’s Fox Post 2 scored four runs in the bottom of the second inning to take the lead for good before posting an 11-4 victory over Nanticoke Post 6 in the first round of the American Legion baseball state tournament on Saturday afternoon.

Fourth-seeded Fox Post 2 (9-7) advances to face No. 1 Stahl Post 30 (14-4) on Sunday at 4 p.m. on the second day of the six-team, double-elimination tourney being played at St. Mark’s High.

Mitch Leighty (1 RBI) went 4-for-4 and scored three runs while Derek Davis went 3-for-3 with three RBI as Fox Post 2 held an 11-7 edge in hits. Gabe Martin added two hits, four runs and an RBI.

The game was tied 1-1 before Fox Post 2’s four-run second. Nanticoke trailed only 5-3 in the third before Fox Post 2 ran off the next five runs.

Starter Jeremy Netsch was the winning pitcher after scattering three runs and six hits. Wilfredo Mendez pitched the final two innings to close out the win.

Tyler Noell (1 RBI, 1 run) and Clay Huffman had two hits apiece for fifth-seeded Nanticoke (2-12), which plays again on Monday at noon. Noell also struck out five as the starting pitcher for Nanticoke.

New Jersey 2, Lower Sussex 0: Robbinsville, N.J. scored one run in the first inning and another in the fourth to blank Lower Sussex in the opening round of the Mid-Atlantic Regional on Saturday afternoon.

The Delaware state champions turn around and play an elimination game on Sunday at 4 p.m. in Bristol, Conn.

Lower Sussex out-hit New Jersey, 4-3, in Saturday’s loss but couldn’t find a way to score. Parker O’Shields had two hits for Lower Sussex with Sophia Bowen and Mariah McCabe adding the other hits.

All seven hits in the contest were singles. Lower Sussex had only two runners reach second base.

Cierra Lewis pitched a three-hitter with five strikeouts, four walks and seven wild pitches for Lower Sussex. New Jersey pitcher Aleiya O’Neal threw a four-hitter with eight strikeouts and no walks.

8-10 State Tournament

M.O.T. 2, Lower Sussex 1: The District I champions reached the state finals by edging Lower Sussex on Friday night.

The Middletown-area squad will face either Lower Sussex or Canal on Sunday at 7 p.m. at Millsboro in the championship game.

In Friday’s victory, Ava Perrucci scored the winning run on a bunt by Ise Phillips in the sixth. Sophia Evans scored M.O.T.’s first run in the first.

Perrucci was the winning pitcher, allowing just one hit with 14 strikeouts.

There is no regional in the Little League age group this summer.
