Local roundup: Eagles sweep Henlopen track meet titles

Smyrna High swept both the boys’ and girls’ team championships as the Henlopen Conference track & field championships concluded at Lake Forest on Friday evening.

The Eagles’ girls finished with 165.5 points to out-distance second-place Cape Henlopen, which collected 120.83. Polytech was third with 79.5.

In the boys’ standings, Smyrna scored 147 points. Sussex Central was second with 95.5 and Polytech took third with 83.

Smyrna’s girls tallied 25 points in the 100 meter hurdles alone with Kailah Crews (16.11) winning the event while teammates Elise Carter (16.51) took second, Brooke Duke (16.94) finished fourth and Denise Turpin (18.45) came in seventh.

The Eagles added 14 more points in the 100-meter dash where Crews (12.62) was second and teammate Aasiyah Abdul-Kareem (12.76) took third.

In the 400-meter relay Abdul-Kareem, Crews, Amaris Rogers and Turpin teamed up to win a time of 50.02 seconds. The Eagles also earned points in the 300-meter hurdles with Carter (47.43) winning the event and Turpin (48.67) taking third.

Carter and Duke and finished 1-2 in the high jump, with Carter winning with a leap of 5-1.

Smyrna’s boys got a big performance from sprinter Demitri Carter, who won the 100-meter dash (11.10) and the 400 (49.93) while taking second in the 200. He also ran a leg on the Eagles’ winning 1,600-meter relay along with Brett Mathis, Liam Meginiss and Daymien Mickle (3:27.01).

In addition, Smyrna won the 3,200-meter relay with Nathaniel Hornberger, Zach Cosme, Mathis and Meginniss winning in 8:11.75.

Individually, Polytech jumper Casey Talamini-Kelemen added to her impressive career resume by winning the girls’ triple jump (38-7), long jump (18-4) and pole vault (11-03).

In the boys’ meet, Polytech’s Matt Gatune followed up his record-breaking win in the 3,200 on Thursday by winning both the 800 (1:59.16) and the 1,600 (4:23.49). Indian River’s BRynn Crandell won both the girls’ 1,600 and 3,200.

Girls’ soccer

Indian River 2, Caesar Rodney 1, OT: Anastasia Diakos’ goal in the 84th minute gave Indian River the overtime win over Caesar Rodney in the Henlopen Conference championship game on Friday afternoon.

The two programs have met in all seven Henlopen championship games in th sport with South champion IR winning for the first time since 2014.

The Indians (13-2), who also beat the Riders (9-7) by a goal during the regular season, tied the game on a goal from Isabella Binko in the 78th minute. Binko assisted on the game-winner with Alexandria Davidson making five saves.

IR out-shot CR, 20-7, while the Riders held a 6-5 edge in corner kicks.

Jada McCullough’s goal in the 13th minute gave CR the early lead Kylee Elliott made 13 saves.

Laurel 7, Seaford 0: Seona Rice netted four goals and an assist in the Bulldogs’ South win on Thursday.

Baseball

Indian River 2, Sussex Tech 1: Colin Hudson pitched a complete-game one-hitter for the Indians in the Henlopen Conference championship game.

The North champion Ravens scored a run in the first inning before South champion IR answered with a pair of runs in the top of the second to take the lead for good.

Hudson, who struck out two, needed only 77 pitches to complete the contest.

Cody Dimes and Grant Allen combined to pitch a five-hitter for Sussex Tech.

Delmarva Christian 2, Sussex Central 1: Riley Culver pitched a six-hitter with seven strikeouts as the Royals (12-4) knocked off the Golden Knights on Thursday.

Delmarva Christian is 7-2 against Henlopen Conference teams this spring, including 2-1 against Henlopen North schools.

Chase Hesson had three of the Royals’ 10 hits while Culver, Carter Breasure and Connor Lewis all added two.

Central pitcher Chase Boyle allowed only one earned run.

Sussex Tech 6, Newark 4: Winning pitcher Alex Adams allowed only one earned run with seven strikeouts in a complete game for the Ravens on Thursday.

Sussex Tech was also led by Jonathan Stokley (2-for-3, 3 RBI), Jaryn Sample (2-for-2, 2 runs) and Malikye Wells (2-for-2, 1 run, 1 RBI).

Smyrna 9, Middletown 5: Robert Durnal singled in the go-ahead before Mason Drummond added a two-run double as Eagles scored four runs in the top of the eighth to win on Thursday.

Dalton Leager went 4-for-5 as Smyrna totaled 14 hits in the contest.

Boys’ lacrosse

Cape Henlopen 20, Sussex Academy 4: The North-champion Vikings downed the Seahawks in the Henlopen Conference championship game on Friday night.

Jacob Schell (2 assists) and Michael Frederick netted four goals apiece for Cape with Gabriel Best (2 assists) and Jaden Davis both adding three.

Henry D’Ambrogi contributed a pair of goals and three assists and Michael Sposato made six saves.

Girls’ lacrosse

Polytech 19, Milford 5: Elizabeth Szell tallied six goals and an assist to pace the Panthers to the Henlopen Conference win.

Claire Fuchs added four goals and Madison Todd had three goals and an assist for Polytech, which got eight saves from Adelyn Mollohan.

Bailey Masten scored twice for Milford and Marlie McMillan made eight saves.

Softball

Lake Forest 9, Milford 8: The Spartans rallied for six runs in their last two at-bats — including four in the bottom of the seventh — to pull out the win on Thursday night.

Tennis

Henlopen finals today: Caesar Rodney, Cape Henlopen and Dover are all tied for the lead in the girls’ team standings going into today’s final day of the Henlopen Conference Tournament.

CR and Sussex Academy lead the boys’ standings with 10 points apiece — two points ahead of second-place Indian River (8).

The tourney concludes today with both the semifinal and final rounds. The semis begin at 9:30 a.m. with the finals to follow.

The girls’ tournament is being played at Caesar Rodney with the boys’ bracket being held at Polytech.

College baseball

DSU in MEAC tourney: Delaware State clinched a berth in the MEAC Tournament with a 6-2 victory over Norfolk State in game two of a seven-inning doubleheader.

The top two teams in the MEAC Northern and Southern divisions will compete in the conference championship tournament May 20-22 in Norfolk. The Hornets secured the No. 2 North seed.

Norfolk State won the opener, 8-7, on Friday.

Jordan Haddaway pitched a complete game and Miguel Rivera (Polytech) was 2-for-2 with three RBI to lead the Hornets.

Northeastern 8, Delaware 1: Freshman Jake Dunion picked up three hits and scored a run while Eric Ludman had two doubles in the Blue Hens’ loss.

College softball

Wesley 8, Cabrini 2: The Wolverines took control with a six-run first before winning the opener of the Atlantic East Conference championship series.

Wesley (23-5) will host Cabrini again today at 10 a.m. in the best-of-three series with a second to follow if necessary.

Rachel Martinez (2-for-4, 2 runs) and Carly Setting (2-for-3) both drove in three runs for the Wolverines. Dori Loukopoulos (13-2) pitched five no-hit innings with six strikeouts and three walks to earn the win.

James Madison 17, Delaware 0: The Blue Hens’ hopes of upsetting the No. 22 Dukes in the CAA finals ended when JMU erupted for 11 runs in the bottom of the first.

The Dukes (34-1) out-hit the Blue Hens, 13-2, in the contest. Delaware (25-9), which was playing in the CAA finals for only the second time and the first time since 2004, has to hope for an at-large NCAA Tournament berth.
