Local roundup: Dover edges CR on Goldman’s last-minute goal

Jewels Goldman’s goal with just 30 seconds left lifted Dover High to a dramatic 4-3 victory over rival Caesar Rodney in Henlopen North field hockey on Thursday evening.

The Senators (3-2 North, 7-3-1 overall), who won their fourth game in a row, opened up a 3-1 halftime lead when Alayna Gigliotti scored twice and Superia Clark added the third goal in the second quarter.

But the Riders tied the contest when Peyton Shields tallied her second goal of the night and Madelyn Reed scored with only 2:50 left in the contest.

Savannah Strauss made three saves for Dover, which out-shot CR, 13-6. Both teams had 11 corners. The Senators own an eight-game unbeaten streak in the series.

The Riders’ Bailey Minear made nine saves.

Polytech 2, Sussex Tech 1: Emilyn Bivens and Megan Popp scored third-quarter goals as the Panthers snapped the Ravens’ three-game winning streak.

Raegan Thomas made four saves as the Panthers out-shot the Ravens, 6-5. Sussex Tech held a 12-7 advantage in corners.

Journey Hopkins scored in the first half for the Ravens while Bryannah Coral stopped four shots.

Delmar 10, Lake Forest 0: Jordyn Hollamon tallied four goals and an assist in the Wildcats’ Henlopen South win.

Maci Bradford added three goals and an assist with Baylie Phillips scoring twice. Unbeaten Delmar (11-0) has still allowed only one goal this season.

Madison Lawson made 18 saves for the Spartans with Addyson Stewart adding five.

Sussex Academy 12, Seaford 2: Morgan Leeper tallied four goals with Callie Short adding three as seven Seahawks scored in their Henlopen South win.

Cailee Layton scored both Seaford goals while Madelyn Breitenbach made 20 saves.

Boys’ soccer

Polytech 1, Sussex Tech 0: Brody Seip’s first-half goal stood up in the Panthers’ Henlopen North victory.

Alexander Szell made six saves for Polytech, which finished with advantages of 10-6 in shots and 5-1 in corner kicks.

Caesar Rodney 4, Dover 0: Tate Wisniewski netted the first three goals for the Riders, who broke open the Henlopen North contest with three second-half goals.

Djosonde Anathol also scored for unbeaten CR (10-0-1), which got six saves from Kaden Childs. The Riders finished with edges of 20-7 in shots and 3-2 in corner kick

The Senators’ Alex Escalante-Diaz made 11 saves.

Cape Henlopen 0, Milford 0: Vikings’ goalie Dalson Case made 10 saves in the Henlopen North tie.

Jesse Alvarez made four saves for the Buccaneers.

Indian River 7, Laurel 0: Jose Savala-Saldivar scored three goals with Jordan Illian netting two goals and a pair of assists in the Indians’ Henlopen South win.

IR held advantages of 24-2 in shots and 2-1 in corner kicks.

Quinn McDorman made 16 saves for the Bulldogs.

Delmar 2, Lake Forest 0: Edsil Lopez and Mason Ball both scored in the second half to give the Wildcats the Henlopen South win.

Carl Kurten made nine saves for Delmar, which out-shot the Spartans, 22-12, and held a 6-5 advantage in corner kicks.

Seaford 3, Sussex Academy 2: The Blue Jays scored twice in the second half a South contest that was tied 1-1 at halftime.

Volleyball

Dover 3, Sussex Central 0: The Senators stretched their winning streak to six in a row with the 25-22, 25-22, 25-11 Henlopen North victory.

Dover (5-0 North, 10-2 overall) was tied with the Golden Knights (4-1, 8-3) for the North lead. Pacing the Senators were Kim Czepukaitis (17 kills), Kendra Williams (9 kills, 2 aces), Elizabeth Baughman (13 digs) and Olivia Anyanwu (38 assists).

Brenya Reid collected 19 ills and 12 digs for Central, Madelyn McTeer had 21 assists and Katelyn Evick added four kills and nine digs.

Smyrna 3, Polytech 1: The Eagles earned the Henlopen North win by scores of 25-18, 25-14, 23-25, 25-16.

Leading Smyrna were Anna Richardson (17 kills, 16 digs), Gianna Romano (13 kills, 3 aces), Karalyn Osborne (4 kills, 2 aces, 9 blocks, 6 digs, 9 assists) and Carly Timblin (14 digs).

Cape Henlopen 3, Milford 0: The Vikings registered the Henlopen North win by scores of 25-8, 25-12, 25-10.

Megan Smith had 30 assists and eight aces for Cape, which got 14 kills from Kalista Lawson, nine from Hope Reed (4 aces) and eight from Rileigh Wilson.

Caesar Rodney 3, Sussex Tech 0: The Riders downed the Ravens, 25-12, 25-5, 25-11, in a Henlopen North match.

Alexandra Mardesich collected nine kills and seven aces for CR, Kaitlyn Hand had 16 digs and Gabrielle Davis added 12 assists.

Indian River 3, Delmar 1: The Indians won the first two sets before picking up the Henlopen South victory by scores of 25-17, 25-12, 25-27, 25-16.

For the Wildcats, Ally Marly (9 kills), Amber Cooper (15 digs) and Natalie Laird (13 assists, 6 digs) led the way.

Sussex Academy 3, Seaford 0: The Seahawks posted the Henlopen win by scores of 25-12, 25-5, 25-5.
