Local Roundup: Delaware State men's basketball team defeated by Liberty

Liberty opened up a 26-point lead before registering a 96-60 victory over Delaware State in men’s basketball on Monday night in Lynchburg, Virginia.

The Hornets (2-7) did lead by as many as five points but the advantage didn’t last. The Flames (5-3) used an 18-point run in the first half to take control, going up by as many as 41 points in the second half.

Dominik Fragala netted a team-high 18 points for Delaware State after sinking 4-o-7 three-point shots. Avery Richardson came off the bench to add 14 points with D’Marco Baucum adding 12.

Baucum also had a team-high 11 rebounds in posting he double-double.

Liberty had four players score in double digits.

High school football

Laurel apologizes for incident: The Laurel School District issued an apology for an incident that occurred during Laurel High’s DIAA Class 1A football state tournament game with Indian River on Friday night.

Masked Laurel students wore T-shirts with a vulgar message aimed at some IR students during the contest. They walked through the IR bleachers wearing the shirts.

According to a statement from superintendent Shawn Larrimore, the students involved were identified, met with administrators and “are being held accountable.”

“The Laurel School District and Laurel High School will use this reprehensible occurrence as a teaching moment. We will continue to have discussion with our student body about how to best create an enthusiastic, yet sportsmanlike atmosphere, while also working with administrative staff to ensure that visiting fans have a positive and welcoming experience while attending Laurel athletics events,” the statement read.

High school wrestling

Stephen Decatur 37, Caesar Rodney 36: The Seahawks edged the Riders on the fourth tiebreaker (most match victories). The match was CR’s season opener.

A.I. duPont 39, First State Military 33: The Tigers downed the Bulldogs in a nonconference match on Monday night.

Boys’ basketball

Delmarva Christian 73, Holly Grove Christian, Md. 23: The Royals built a 42-11 halftime advantage before picking up the victory in its season opener on Monday.

Dontarius Jones (14), Loubens Fleurima (13), Edward Higgins (11) and Riley Briggs all scored in double figures.

Girls’ basketball

Paul VI, Va. 60, Cape Henlopen 28: Paul VI opened up a 29-11 halftime lead before downing the Vikings in their season opener on Sunday.

Mehkia Applewhite (five rebounds, four steals), Lauryn Heard and Ellie Rishko all had points for Cape in a contest that was part of the Art Turner Tipoff Classic.
