Local roundup: Cape downs Caravel in baseball regular-season finale

Cape Henlopen High scored six runs in the first two innings before going on to an 8-5 victory over Caravel in non-conference baseball on Saturday afternoon.

With the DIAA state tournament bracket being determined on Sunday, the Vikings finish the regular season at 13-5. The tourney is open this year with 44 teams opting to play in it.

Hunter Rauch (2-for-3) and Gage Joseph (2 RBI) both homered for Cape, which led 6-3 after two innings. Pitcher Nick Cox allowed just one earned run and struck out seven in five innings of relief to earn the win.

Dover 9, Laurel 3: Alec Rodriguez was 3-for-4 with four RBI as the Senators evened their record at 9-9.

Connor McPhail pitched a complete game with four strikeouts to take the win while Marquis Guy scored three runs.

The Bulldogs’ Trevor Collins was 4-for-4 while Royce Scotton went 3-for-4.

Delmarva Christian 9, Polytech 3: The Royals scored all nine of their runs in the last three innings — including five in the seventh — to overcome an early 2-0 deficit.

Riley Culver, Conner Lewis and Nathaniel Keller all contributed doubles for Delmarva Christian (13-4), which went 8-2 against Henlopen Conference teams this season.

Dale Austin had a pair of doubles for the Panthers (8-10).

Softball

Red Lion Christian 6, Smyrna 4: The Eagles rallied for three runs in the bottom of the sixth before falling short.

Smyrna, which finishes the regular season at 12-7, has lost six games by one or two runs this spring.

Seaford 24, Newark 0: Cameron Knowles (4 runs) pitched a five-inning no-hitter with 10 strikeouts and also went 4-for-4 in the Blue Jays’ win.

Sage Larimore (4-for-4, 3 runs) also Torian Rayford (3 hits, 3-run homer, 4 RBI) led Seaford’s 24-hit attack.

Boys’ lacrosse

Polytech 10, Woodbridge 6: Samuel Slater collected six goals and an assist while Zach Waski won all 20 of his faceoff attempts in the Panthers’ win on Friday.

Bret Nowakowski and Bruce Nyandemo both scored twice as Polytech finished the regular season 7-8.

Girls’ soccer

Padua 3, Polytech 0: The Pandas scored twice to put away the win over the Panthers on Friday.

Delaney Dillon made nine saves for Polytech as Padua finished with advantages of 17-3 in shots and 6-0 in corner kicks.

Girls’ lacrosse

Smyrna 18, Lake Forest 0: Madison Graham and Megan Keller netted four goals apiece as the Eagles finished the regular season 5-10.

Madison Fillo and Khushi Patel both scored three goals while Brynn Rifino made six saves.

Cape Henlopen 19, St. Mark’s 4: The Vikings finished the regular season at 13-1 with the win.

Caravel 23, Sussex Tech 8: The Buccaneers led by only four before out-scoring the Ravens, 13-2, in the second half.

Nataleigh Hunter had three goals for Sussex Tech while Ava Dunn and Jade Powell had two apiece. Bethany Covey made six saves.

Indian River 22, Hodgson 2: Drew Szlasa tallied five goals and a pair of assists to pace the Indians to the win on Friday.

Morgan McGee added four goals and two assists while Kylie Kirschner and Kylie Harris both scored three times. Allyson Clark made eight saves as IR out-shot the Eagles, 28-10.

College softball

Wesley 10, Cabrini 2: The Wolverines wrapped up a memorable final season by winning the Atlantic East Conference Tournament title on Saturday.

Wesley (24-5) won the best-of-three series 2-0 after also winning the regular-season crown. The Wolverines, who are the school’s last athletic team competing before it closes, still have a chance at a post-season tourney invitation.

Wesley capped off Saturday’s win with a five-run fifth. Amanda Curry (2-for-3, 1 run, 3 RBI) and Dori Loukopoulos (1-for-2, 2 runs, 2 RBI) led the Wolverines.

Loukopoulos, Miranda Kinney and Curry all homered. Loukopoulos was also the winning pitcher, throwing a three-hitter with eight strikeouts and only one walk.

College baseball

Norfolk State 10, Delaware State 9: The Spartans scored six runs over the last three innings, including two in the bottom of the ninth, to overcome a 9-4 deficit.

The Hornets, who finish the regular season at 15-26, begin play in the MEAC Tournament on Thursday in Norfolk.

Cole Garey (Polytech) went 3-for-5 with a homer and four RBI for DSU while Trey Paige (3 runs) and Tripp Kimmell (Milford) also had three hits each.

Northeastern 26, Delaware 4: The Huskies erupted for 21 runs between the third and seventh innings in the first game of a CAA doubleheader on Saturday.

Northeastern finished with 20 hits in the contest while also taking advantage of 13 walks and four hit batters by the Blue Hens.
College athletics

11 to go into DSU Hall: Delaware State’s first All-America bowler, second all-time leading rusher and two MEAC championship coaches highlight the school’s 2021 Athletics Hall-of-Fame class.

A total of 11 individuals will be honored during the annual hall-of-fame ceremony scheduled for Sept. 3. The class will also be recognized during the Hornets’ home football contest against Bowie State the following day.

The class includes bowling great Angela Reynolds (’10); Reggie Barnes (‘89), number two in team history and 12th on the MEAC all-time list with 3,282 career rushing yards; Mary “Honey” Lamb-Bowman, who coached both volleyball and women’s basketball; Harry Van Sant, who served 14 seasons as head baseball coach (1985-98); baseball standout Ronald Probst, a .397 career hitter; baseball pitcher Tim Vaillancourt; former football standouts Malcolm Showell (posthumous), Nate Dancy, Timothy King and Sam Smith; and women’s basketball great Chavonne Stewart, a member of Hornets’ 1,000-point/500-rebound club.
