Madison Brengle got off to a tough start before eventually falling to Tamara Zidanšek, 6-4, 6-1, in the second round of the French Open on Wednesday morning.
Zidanšek never trailed after winning the first five games of the match before advancing to the third round of the Grand Slam event.
Dover’s Brengle did win four straight games to cut Zidanšek’s lead to just 5-4 in the first set. But the 23-year-old Slovenian broke Brengle’s serve to take the set.
Brengle, who was making only her second appearance in the second round of the French Open, won just one game the rest of the way. Zidanšek won the match in one hour and five minutes.
The 85th-ranked Zidanšek won five of six break points and hit 28 winners in the match. She next faces Katerina Siniaková in the third round.
The 31-year-old Brengle, who is ranked No. 84 in the world, is now 2-8 all-time in the French Open.
College field hockey
Five Blue Hens honored: Five Delaware field hockey players were named to the National Field Hockey Coaches Association Mid-Atlantic All-Region teams.
Senior Femke Strien, sophomore Ashlyn Carr (Delmar), and freshman Julia Duffhuis were named to the first team, while junior Grace Hoepfner and freshman Berber Bakermans were awarded second-team honors.
This year’s CAA Tournament’s Most Outstanding Player, Strien finished the year with three goals and five assists for 11 points. Strien earned two CAA Player of the Week awards and was named to the All-CAA first team this season.
This is also Carr’s second appearance on the All-Region first team. She led the team with 13 points this season with seven assists and three goals.
Her seven assists, tied with senior Emily Kresho, led the team this season. Carr was also named to the All-CAA first team this spring.
Duffhuis was tabbed the CAA Rookie of the Year after she led the Blue Hens with five goals in her freshman campaign.
Bakermans’ started all 10 games of her freshman campaign, concluding the season with six points from one goal and four assists.
Hoepfner finished her junior campaign with four goals and one assist for nine points.
Local football
Adult team looking for players, coaches: The Thunder Wolves Football Club is for players, assistant coaches and sponsors for the upcoming season.
The team is going to hold a workout on June 12 at the Camden-Wyoming Little League Complex from 10 a.m-noon.
The Thunder Wolves will be playing in the Xtreme East Football League, which begins is season on Aug. 21. Preseason practices will be on Tuesday and Thursday evenings as well as Saturday mornings.
Potential players need to be at least 18 and finished with their high school eligibility.
