The University of Delaware tallied the first two goals of the contest before edging George Mason, 2-1, in its season opener in women’s soccer on Thursday evening.
It was the third straight year that the Blue Hens won their first game of the season.
Delaware led 2-0 less than 18 minutes into the contest on goals from Sara D’Appolonia and Claudia Benz.
The Patriots closed within 2-1 by scoring on a penalty kick with 16 minutes remaining in the game before falling short.
The Hens ended up with advantages of 14-5 in shots and 5-2 in corner kicks. Delaware’s Lauren Krinsky made a pair of saves.
Hartford 5, Delaware State 0: The Hawks netted four goals in a 10-minute span late in the second half to pull away in the Hornets’ season opener at Alumni Stadium.
Hartford out-shot DelState, 22-1, and held a 6-4 edge in corner kicks. Eriona Shabani made five saves in each to record a total of 10 for the Hornets.
DelState next plays at Bryant on Sunday at noon.
