LEWES — Thirteen Henlopen Conference wrestlers reached the semifinals of the DIAA individual state wrestling tournament on Saturday’s first day of action for the three-day meet.

Saturday’s competition featured seven weight classes, 106 pounds to 145 pounds, wrestling first-round, second-round and quarterfinal matches. The meet resumes today at Cape Henlopen High with the remaining seven weight classes, 152 pounds to 285 pounds, wrestling their first three rounds of the tournament.

The semifinals and finals are scheduled for Wednesday at Cape Henlopen.

Milford High led the downstate contingent on Saturday as four Buccaneers, Trevor Copes (113 pounds), Corey Messick (120), Jack Thode (126) and Trenton Grant (132), wrestled their way into the semifinals.

Emily Thode of Milford also made history in the first round. She became the first female to win a match in the history of the DIAA state meet, earning a pin in the first round of the 106-pound bracket over First State Military’s Avori Alexander.

Smyrna, Lake Forest, Sussex Central and host Cape Henlopen had two wrestlers apiece reach the semifinals.

Gabe Giampietro (113) and Jamar Wells (132) will represent the Eagles in the semifinals while Tyler Ratledge (113) and Abdullah Ahmad-Statts (132) made it from Lake Forest.

Dylan King (120) and Mason Ankrom (138) are in the semifinals from Sussex Central. Cape Henlopen’s Michael Frederick (138) and Luke Bender (145) also won their three matches on Saturday.

Caesar Rodney 126-pounder Cameron Cataldi was the other downstate wrestler to qualify for the semifinals.

Caravel Academy led all schools with six wrestlers in the semifinals. The Buccaneers top the team standings as well with 90.5 points, ahead of second-place Salesianum (76) and third-place Milford (75.5).

With no dual-meet team championships being held this year, the state champions will be decided at the individual tournament.

Swimming

CR takes ninth in states: Caesar Rodney High was the top downstate squad at the DIAA girls’ state swimming championships, finishing ninth in the 22-team meet held at Sussex Academy on Saturday.
