Delaware tallied 12 first-half goals before posting a 20-3 victory over Delaware State in women’s lacrosse on Wednesday afternoon in Delaware Stadium.
It was the first meeting between the state’s two NCAA Division I programs.
Juniors Danika Swech and Kendra Schweizer each tallied hat tricks for the Blue Hens (1-1), while senior attack Kate Bradford recorded a game-high five assists. Eleven different Hens scored in the win, including seven who notched their first collegiate goals.
Freshmen Riley Gillin and Jenna McHale along with juniors Meghan Johnson, Amelia Kienzle and Nikki Feaster each scored twice for Delaware.
Moe Brown recorded 16 saves in the cage for the Hornets (0-1), who got goals from Gwenna Gentle, Emmy McGill and Tamrin Swann. Delaware out-shot DSU, 44-9.
Men’s basketball
Norfolk State 86, Delaware State 55: The Hornets fell behind by 16 at halftime before dropping to 0-8 in the MEAC.
Zach Kent and Myles Carter netted 11 points apiece for DSU (2-13 overall) with John Stansbury adding 10. The Hornets shot only 39.6 percent (19-for-48) and committed 28 turnovers in dropping to 0-4 against the Spartans this season.
After leading by two points early in the contest, Delaware State trailed by as many as 34 in the second half.
Women’s soccer
Mount St. Mary’s 6, Delaware State 1: Geligne Franklin tallied the Hornets’ second goal of the season but not before the Mountaineers scored the first five goals of the contest.
Goalie Ashley Maribo made five saves for DSU (0-3), which was out-shot 16-5.
Golf
UD’s Nieves in PGA event: University of Delaware junior golfer Roberto Nieves will participate in the PGA Tour’s Puerto Rico Open this weekend, becoming the second Blue Hen in program history to compete on the tour.
The tournament, an official FedExCup tournament of the PGA Tour, will be held Thursday through Sunday at Grande Reserve Country Club in Rio Grande. Nieves earned a spot in the field during a two-day tournament held in Palmas del Mar, Puerto Rico earlier this month.
Nieves is the second UD men’s golfer to appear on the tour, along with Joey McLister, who competed in the 2012 Zurich Classic in New Orleans.
Swimming
Hens’ Selling earns CAA honor: Sophomore Mira Selling was named the Colonial Athletic Association Women’s Swimmer of the Week.
The Dresden, Germany native won all four of her individual races so far in 2021. She holds the fastest times in the conference in both the 200 and 500-yard freestyles, at 1:51.70 and 5:00.63, respectively.
