LINCOLN — A 12-hour plus standoff ended peacefully as a 66-year-old man was taken into custody when exiting a residence early Wednesday afternoon, authorities said.

The man, whose name was not disclosed, was then transported from the home to an area hospital for evaluation, the Delaware State Police said.

The standoff began at approximately 1:03 a.m. and concluded at roughly 1:25 p.m. in the 18000 block of Johnson Road.

Troopers were initially called to the home to check on the welfare of an unstable man alone in the house, State Police spokesman Master Cpl. Gary E. Fournier said.

Cpl. Fournier said detectives continued to investigate the incident and charges may be filed. An initial report indicated that weapons may have been involved, and police said a shotgun and ammunition were recovered after the standoff ended.

Several area residents were evacuated as a precaution, police said.

Johnson Road was closed between U.S. 113 and North Old State Road during the incident, and reported to be open at 3:42 p.m. Motorists were advised to take alternate routes of travel when police announced the standoff at 5:20 a.m.

While “no schools were immediately affected by our operation,” Cpl. Fournier said, it was not immediately clear if any Milford School District schools were closed.

“If so, our office was not directly informed,” Cpl. Fournier said.
