Lewis C. Murphy, Sr. of Dover, formerly of Harrington, passed away peacefully at the Silver Lake Nursing Home on Wednesday, January 17, 2024. Mr. Murphy was born in Greensboro, MD to the late Raymond and Anna Murphy.
Mr. Murphy served his country proudly in both the U.S. Air Force, and the U.S. Army. He joined the Air Force at a young age, served his country, then re-enlisted and honorably discharged from the Army. For most of his career, Mr. Murphy worked with race horses, as a driver and a trainer. He truly loved harness racing and horses were his life. In his younger days, he was a member of the United States Trotters Assoc., and worked as a security guard at Ocean Downs.
Mr. Murphy will be remembered as a kind, sweet, energetic person who was liked by many and full of spunk. His closest friends called him "Slugger". He will be sorely missed.
In addition to his parents; he was preceded in death by his wife, Sarah Murphy; siblings, Ella May Kinman, Elizabeth Murphy, Betty Jane Ware, Viola, and Raymond Murphy Jr.
He is survived by his children, Beverly Hollinger, Wanda Roe, LuAnn Marsh, Lewis Murphy Jr., John (Rebecca) Murphy, Roland (Katie) Murphy, Richard (Benalee) Murphy, Robert Murphy, Linda (Perry) Jaggers; brother, Donald Murphy; numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, and extended family.
A funeral Service will be on Wednesday, January 24, 2024, at 12 Noon, at the Melvin Funeral Home, 15522 South DuPont Hwy., Harrington, DE, with a visitation for family and friends starting at 11 AM. Interment will take place at the Delaware Veterans Cemetery, Millsboro.
