Letter to the Editor: No rest for the weary, as pandemic continues on

Posted

Right now, especially if you are a rational human being, you should be exhausted and anxious. Who could have guessed that our democracy would be in mortal danger, just as the pandemic is getting its second wind?

It seems that all the worldly powers of evil are against us, both internal and external. The internet has shown that it cannot only be a font of knowledge, enlightenment and community-building, but it can also be a life-choking cesspool of lies, deception and community disintegration. Sometimes, we seem to be at a point where just one more convert to the far right will turn America from one of the best democracies to one of the worst autocracies.

It is so easy to become defeatist. But this is no time for retreat.

Our democracy may not be perfect, but it is far better than the alternative being offered up by Steve Bannon, Donald Trump and company. Democracy is a place where people cannot be lorded over by kings or tyrants and, for our entire history thus far, Americans have considered it valuable enough to risk their lives for its preservation.

Let’s hope that our generation will be up to the task of saving it from its greatest threat so far: apathy.
