Letter to the Editor: New initiative aims to improve police-community relations

Posted

There are real, tangible solutions to improving police and community relationships. One way to do this is by ensuring regular people are part of the answer.

Everyone wants a safe neighborhood to live, work and play in, and everyone wants to trust law enforcement officers who take on the duty to protect and serve.

When individual members of law enforcement break that trust with violence or brutality against members of our community, the Law-Enforcement Officers’ Bill of Rights (LEOBOR) stands in the way of justice and fairness.

LEOBOR prevents the public from accessing police misconduct records or from having a community review board. We need these key elements of transparency to build trust between our law enforcement officers and community.

Amending LEOBOR is about rebuilding safe and secure neighborhoods. With community-led police reform, Delaware can have safer neighborhoods and stronger communities.

That’s why today at 6:30 p.m., the Building People Power Campaign is having an interest session for a new initiative, the Delaware Campaign for Fair Policing.

This campaign will draw together the most impacted communities — including Black and Latino, immigrant and working class — to advocate for reforming LEOBOR.

With a little people power, we can make a big difference in improving police-community relationships and ultimately create safer neighborhoods across Delaware. More information about this event can be found here.
