Leroy W. Meekins, 79 SMYRNA - Leroy W. Meekins, of Smyrna died Wednesday, Dec. 23, 2009, in the Bayhealth Hospital Center, Dover. He was 79. Mr. Meekins was born near Chestertown, Md., the son of the late Charles A. and Rachel Hurd Meekins. Mr. Meekins was a self employed Dry Wall contractor, and worked for 36yrs. through out the Delmarva area. In addition to his dry wall career, Mr. Meekins was a well known singer and performer with his band Blue Hen Country. They were very popular and could be found playing also throughout the Delmarva region as well as Pennsylvania. Mr. Meekins loved to hunt and fish. He loved spending time in his garden and enjoyed cooking. He was an avid antique toy car collector as well as several other items. He was a member of the Smyrna-Clayton Moose. In addition to his parents, Mr. Meekins is also predeceased by two sisters, Virginia Joiner and Ella Tead. Mr. Meekins is survived by his wife of 23yrs., Janet Marie Meekins; daughters, Phyllis Welch and her husband Marion of Barclay, Md., Leigh Ann Bodine and her husband James of Clayton; sons, Leroy W. Meekins Jr. and his wife Sandra of Clayton, Roger Dean Meekins of Clayton, and Charles Millard Meekins and his wife Crystal of Edenburgh, Ind.; two sisters, Mary Johnson and Catherine Dierker, both of Crumpton, Md.; 13 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren also survive him, as well as many other family members and friends. Funeral services will be 1 p.m., Monday, Dec. 28, in the Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home, 370 W. Cypress St., Millington, where friends and family may call after 11 a.m. Interment will be in the Chester Cemetery, Chestertown, Md. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions in his memory to the Lillian Smith Senior Center, Clayton, DE 19938.
