HARTLY - Lenwood (Woody) Mitchell Johnson Sr. passed on Wednesday, Dec. 20, 2017 at Bay Health Kent General Hospital, Dover after a short illness.
Woody was born on May 8, 1937 in Cheswold, Delaware, son of the late Franklin and Mary Carney Johnson.
Woody was married to Betty Downes Johnson, the love of his life. He worked for Warren Brothers for 6 years and later retired from George and Lynch after 43 years.
He loved going to Del Mar to drag racing events and watching his favorite Nascar drivers Dale Earnhardt Sr. and Jr. at Dover Downs. He played baseball for the Cheswold Tigers, loved playing bingo at McDonalds with his friends and attended all of his grand children's baseball games. He would drive his motor home to various campsites to hang out with family and friends, and enjoyed going to Millsboro PowWows.
He was proceeded in death by two sons, Don Troy and Nathan Wintfield Johnson; one step son, John Franklin Downes; sisters, Anna B Ridgway Sammons, Dottie Coker, Mary Virginia Morgan, Winnie Wortham, and brother Jimmy Johnson.
He is survived by his wife Betty; two sons, Lenwood Johnson Jr. (Tanya), and Van Johnson (Julie); daughter, Suzette Freeman; step daughters, Linda Wales, Penny Byler (Joe) and Hope Downes (Larry); two sisters, Joan Brittingham and Sandra Coker; brother, Jackie Johnson; 16 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, friends, and a special daughter-in-law, Edie Whitebread (Larry).
Services will be held 1p.m., Friday, Dec. 29, 2017 at Torbert Funeral Chapel South, 1145 E. Lebanon Rd. (Rt. 10), Dover. Visitation will be from 12p.m. - 1p.m. Interment will be at Immanuel Union United Methodist Church Cemetery, Cheswold.
In lieu of flowers the family suggest contributions be made to Immanuel Union United Methodist Church, P O Box 309, Cheswold, DE 19936.
